From this source, it does appear that distinctions were made at least as far back as the 1930s - http://www.thebritisharaucanaclub.co.uk/history/4588347382 - just sharing - I am ambivalent to the credibility of the source or whether others wish to agree with it or not.Hatchery Easter Eggers aren't mixes. They just haven't updated their marketing. Prior to the 1970s, there were no Ameraucana/Araucana/Easter Egger distinctions made. There were no breed standards accepted for the Ameraucana and the Araucana. All of those types of birds were interbred and all were called Araucana, however, they would have been considered Easter Eggers by today's definitions.
It's those birds that hatcheries started with, and are still breeding. It's not that they are selling mixed breeds. They just never bothered to update their marketing to reflect the changes that have occurred.
The U.K. history is completely different. They do not make a distinction between the tufted, rumpless birds and the crested, tailed, muffed birds. They both are considered Araucana, under the U.K. breed standard. Their birds are also derived from slightly different gene pools. From this source, it does appear that distinctions were made at least as far back as the 1930s - http://www.thebritisharaucanaclub.co.uk/history/4588347382 - just sharing - I am ambivalent to the credibility of the source or whether others wish to agree with it or not.
Mounting means nothing. It can be dominance related. That bird looks male.

Cockerel or pullet? 6 weeks old. I have it in a pen with three of her brothers. The three r surly cocks. They r alreasy starting to show agression. This one is a little more laid back. Thank you.
I have 2 Silkie mixes that were dumped in my yard this spring. They are male looking. One is definitely a hen (she was mounted) the other has even bigger waddles and I think hen because the rooster I have doesn't allow other guys on his turf.![]()
