Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Ye
Really?
Yes, the sad truth is that these birds were bred to be inexpensive food. They grow like mad so they don't need to be fed for very long (or occupy space) before they are ready to "harvest". They are not bred to staying healthy and living a happy chicken life. It is a real travesty, but that's what it is. I am so sorry!

I've got ten chickens and two were supposed to be White Leghorns, but we got them at the feedstore. I've since learned that the feedstore isn't the ideal place to go. Long story short, we're worried these might be meat birds. They grew twice as fast as the others, and now they're wobbling along and breathing heavy and look terrible compared to the other 8. I guess I'll start here and hope for an I.D. first, then move on to why they have bald patches and breath like they smoke a pack a day. Aprox. 7 weeks old.
Looks just like my female Cornish rock

All I've seen the Cornish rocks do is eat and eat, they never really stop so as long as there foods not limited they just get worse. 8 weeks is average harvest time

I get it. I think my last comment was misinterpreted: the quote seemed to me like common sense. I will harvest them. I will not let them suffer... thanks for the help.

We had some that did that and it was easily treatable bacterial infection. We bought some broad spectrum antibiotics from tractor supply that go in the drinking water. After a week they were right as rain. :)

If you don't feel comfortable butchering them yourself, which I completely understand, try and find a processor in your area. That way you can pay a small fee and have them returned to you already butchered and packed. Just remember, you are doing the right thing.

That is the saddest thing I've ever heard. This is what I hate about the big time industrys. They are not just food. :( Do they not lay eggs or forage?

Hello! I'm a new chicken owner with 4 black splash Ameraucanas. They're supposed to be pullets, but as they get older a couple of them are making me suspicious... :)

Chick #1: This is the oldest; I think it's about 7 wks old?

Chick #2: This one is 6 wks. The shyest and quietest of the bunch.

Chick #3: Also 6 wks. I swear this one has tried to crow...no sound comes out, but it stands up tall, stretches its head up and opens its beak for a second or two.

Chick #4: I think this one is about 5 wks old. I started noticing the pinkness in the comb several weeks ago when it was still just a tiny little thing. I thought the others had been pecking at it, but now I think he's a man, lol.

Any ideas?
