This is Fancy, our "free rare breed" chick from our Murray McMurray order. We have a friend lined up to re-home Fancy if he's a he, but we are really, really hoping she's a she. The chicks are only 5-6 weeks old now, so I know it's difficult to tell, but if we are going to have to part with him, I think the sooner the better for everyone.

I've read here and there that crested roos have really crazy spikes, while hens have more rounded, fuller pom-poms. To me, it looks like a rounder, fuller crest, but I'm not sure if that's just wishful thinking? I've also heard that the "free rare breed" chicks are almost always roos.

Also- somewhat related question: when Fancy's real feathers started replacing the baby chick fuzz, there was a bald spot in the middle of her crown that is sloooooowly filling in. Is that typical, or did the other chicks peck at it? I haven't seen anyone doing so.

That's a pullet. Boys will have the start of wattles around 4 weeks. Mine were super obvious by 6.

That's such terrific news. I will keep looking for the wattles, but I definitely haven't seen anything even remotely hinting at wattles yet.

? The chick on the left ^ and in the other pic is an almost 6 week old Iowa Blue. I know nothing about this breed. Today I noticed (s)he is bullying the other two chicks, same age. Is this a breed thing, or is Sioux actually a boy named Sioux?! I know it's early, but I thought someone might know more about these than I do.

Since the thread starter (sorry forgot your name xc) doesn't know breeds I can help, first looks like a new hampshire red, 2nd buff cochin, 3rd barred rock
