Oooh, what a handsome fella he turned out to be

I'm thinking I have 2 roosters, which will make 4 for us. Way too many! Lol

Isn't he gorgeous? I think most breeds have handsome males though right? When I was researching breeds, the ONE breed I put on my definite list was a Golden Laced Wyandotte. How ironic that the only male I got was the one type I most wanted. Also, he was my daughters favorite by a landslide. He is sooooo pretty in sunlight when all the black parts shimmer iridescently. I am tempted to keep him if he is quiet. He is 16 weeks and we have heard him crow only once. Maybe we will be lucky and have a very non-roostery rooster? I am scared to try one of those collars that choke them.

I am waiting until the last minute to re-home him to my uncle's farm and until he is being obnoxiously roostery, he gets to stay here with his hatch mates. I worry about him, as he is very gentle and sweet. My uncle has other roosters and I think when he is this young he would get hurt a lot worse than later when he has some size and defenses. Also, it may sound wierd, but he is useful for taking any potential predator away from my pullets. Whenever my dog or someone else's has gotten to the chicken area, Butterfly always seems to be the one that the dog focuses on. I guess this is nature's way of dealing with extra roosters?

Splash Ameraucana, actually, and that is indeed a cockerel.

Another question she has one eye that looks white in the middle. Kind of like a cataract. Would that be in fact a cataract?

Could be. Most birds I've seen with that kind of issue end up partially blind in the afflicted eye. Aside from some Marek's sufferers, I've never seen much rhyme or reason to why or how birds get it.

The woman said that this particular bird is a Silkie/Leghorn mix and was hatched this July. My guess is roo based on the hackle and saddle feathers as well as the bright comb. What does everyone else think?

Definitely a cockerel.

Any opinions on these two now that they are 11-12 weeks old? They are blue cochin/easter egger mixes. I noticed the pretty tail feathers on the black one about a week ago. It has massive legs and sure likes to fight with the blue one still...
