Hi I’m fairly new to raising chickens. I noticed a couple months ago one of my girls would shake her head a lot maybe every 5 minutes. I live in northern Michigan and since they are confined to the coop at the moment I spend a lot more one-on-one time with themand I noticed that her headshaking has gotten a lot worse and she’s doing it about three times a minute. She eats fine except for now that she has to keep shaking her head sometimes the food flies out of her mouth. But I’m sure something is wrong. I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or if anyone knows what could be the problem? Thanks

Hi, welcome to BYC! :frow

Sorry your girl is having trouble. I have one cockerel who I raised out for breeding but also noticed some head shaking now and then. I decided not to breed him, feeling as though it is some kind of genetic tick, maybe a problem with the nervous system. Mine has not increased so far. But he is on the cull list ASAP.

But here is a symptom checker tool that will give you possibilities according to the symptoms you see...

Hope it's something simple. :fl

Have you noticed any wheezing?
Have you noticed any comb color changing?

Have you noticed any tiny blackish mites around her face and combs?

For mites, I treat with Diamatious earth every other day for 3 weeks. Ill treat at night, grab em by the legs, put them upside down, take a handful and dust the powder around their neck and head.

I haven’t noticed any wheezing I haven’t noticed any mites but I’m going to check and I mix their food with diatomaceous earth. When I’m looking for mites should I just lift up her feathers on her neck?

Mixing DE w/ their food doesn’t do anything to the mites on their body. Mixed DE to their dust bath and or powder them w/ it in between feathers.

I also put DE in thier dust bath and in the nooks and crannies inside the coop but it’s been so cold here they haven’t gone out into their yard so they haven’t really used their dust bath should I make a dust bath for inside their coop?

Hey! Sorry your having trouble! Have you checked the base of the feathers to see if there are any lice or mite eggs clumped there? You'll know them when you see them. one possibility could be gape worm, which are parasites to attach to the lining of the windpipe. I'm afraid I don't know much about them, maybe Someone else has some info on them? Hope this was helpful! Keep us posted!

What a nightmare and some serious prolonged exposure for both you and the birds. To ineffective to warrant my attention. My time is valuable and why subject the birds to all that?

DE is CRAP in my opinion for ALL things chicken related. Yes it works for some uses, but is over touted and over used snake oil in the chicken world. :old

Guess what... lots of feeds already have DE in their ingredient list because it is approved for use at a rate of up to 2% in order to keep it from clumping... and NOTHING more. Have you read yours lately?

No it won't work as a wormer as it becomes ineffective when wet. If it worked as a wormer, those companies that include it would tout that on their bags. They don't because it isn't true.

Seems like if you were facing mites, better to use something that is safe, effective, and affordable... also approved for use in chickens and no required withdrawal time for eggs... Permethin spray is my preference due to ease of application. It is also available in powder and won't require treating every other day. Guess what else... kills on contact the very first time. Repeat may only be needed a couple weeks later depending on species and according to the directions.

You can make a dirt bath inside if you want. Many people do. Again the DE is irrelevant and many claim it works as a preventative... even if they've never seen said parasite with their own two eyes. Doesn't mean it works, just means they don't have an issue.

No... looking for mites is easiest by... using a flashlight after dark. Remove the bird keeping lights dim. Place bird on their back or hold them like that (2 people is easiest), legs bent towards chest, and part the feathers near the vent and on the abdomen and look for things crawling away. Some mites live in cracks of the wood and only come out to feed on the birds at night. While others do live on the birds. Yet there are some that are completely microscopic and live in the feather shaft or under the leg scales and you will NEVER see them but only evidence of them. Those kind are treated differently.

In addition... I've never had lice or mites cause head shaking. That would be more along the lines of the gape worm mentioned, something else stuck in the wind pipe as chickens do not have a gag reflex, or an ear infection. I have also never had mite on or around the face and that sounds more like stick tight fleas... though I do learn something new everyday if I can and certainly have not yet experienced all that I will in my chicken keeping adventure...

Any treatment requiring every other day intervention on my part for 3 weeks MIGHT well result in a cull... or more efficient means of treatment attempted at the very least. There are other organic ones called elector PSP or Spinosad that may be used instead of the permethrin. They are a little pricier, but still better than snake oil if I had to choose one. :)

I'm all for natural and organic, if it works WEll. But even natural or organic poison is still POISON, period.

Anyways, I highly doubt your head shaking is caused by mites. Did you check that symptom tool yet?

Hope you get it figured out! :fl

Hi I wanted to give an update on Quita(my chicken that was shaking her head all the time).I checked her for mites and couldn’t find any sign of them.i basically sat out in my coop half the day to observe her and what I did notice was theywere not drinking thier water.I had gotten them a new water that was heated because the water kept freezing due to the cold temps here.It had a very short cord on it so I had to move the water up onto a shelf and had a towel sitting underneath it.well come to find outthey were afraid of the towel and they were not getting up there to drink. That day I moved the towel and I sat her up there and she drank for about 15 minutes I felt terrible. I got an extension cord and I move theheated water back down onto the floor and she seems to be doing fine now.She shakes her head once in a while but she’s always done that a little bit but now that I move that water down there her head shaking is nothing near what it was b4 because it was to the point she couldn’t hold food in her mouth she was shaking it so much. Honestly I have no idea if this was the cure I will have to wait and see butshe seems to be back to normal. Thanks for all your help

I put my waterer on a landscaping brick. It keeps it up high enough that it doesn't get too dirty. But, they still manage to get pine shavings in it.
Good for you for noticing that they weren't getting their water!
