I bought what i thought was 2 cuckoo marans 9 weeks ago but one is lookinh diffwrenr plus much smaller seems like he/she isny growing. Could they have gotten a egg mixed up when hatching them out ? The pic of the small one he/she is 9 wks old and the bigger blk pullet same age is suppose to be the same as the lil one. Could something be wrong with it

I was told they were all the same age and I went back and Seen the ones they still had at the feed store and all of them were the same size as my pullet and the darker blk , the lil one is lighter and just isn't growing

Hi, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

The little/lighter one is likely male. Which would usually make them larger.

He may have some unseen genetic issue. Maybe he is being kept away from food.

He looks puffed up like he could be suffering for coccidiosis, which would delay growth. Some birds are hardier than others so may not all succumb.

I have a chick that's doing the same thing, and I'm worried about her. She is all puffed up and smaller than her brother. I know that roos can be bigger than hens, but she's just always all puffed up. My grandpa (the one who gave me her) says it might be a parasite, so I agree with @EggSighted4Life
Your chicken might have coccidiosis :(

Cocci is easy to treat. There are 9 strains and only 1 shows as blood in poo. They can catch it even if they are on medicated feed. Corid is what I have successfully used. If you treat one, treat them all... and DON'T substitute vitamins as the medication works by depriving the cocci of thiamine, a B vitamin. It basically starves them out.

It is often indicated by a chick standing, puffed up, and eyes closed. A fecal float done at ANY vet can confirm your coccidia count as well as check for any other worm species, which I don't suspect. When I did have it even the chick that I saw a bloody poo from didn't have those every single time.

I had 2 of the same breed and one was always much smaller. She has balanced out now and they are the same size. Could be just a slow grower. Best of luck with your cuties.

He has always looked fluffed up but I did treat him just in case and no the rooster actually let's him get up under his feathers like a chick would do to it's mother when cold . So he does get to eat the roo or other pullet do not keep him from eating so idk
