Took my cat to the vet today to get checked for some seizures he's been having, he had them for awhile last year and when it got cool he quit having em so I didnt think any of it, He started having em again so I took him in

This is definetly not the brightest person i've ever met (not my normal vet some new guy there)

I specifically told them at the beginning, I only wanted a routine exam ($40) and NOTHING else done unless I was told and how much it would be. (I dont have a job yet, 16, and I use my social security for my phone bill, Animal feed bill, and other personal care items)

They told me I would be told and thats all they'd be doing. They tell me he's under weight even though they pulled the scale out and never put him on the darn thing, This cat gets hard food choice daily and a can of wet food a day, sometimes 2. He looks pregnant when looking at him! Weighed him myself when I got him and he comes up to about 9 1/2 LB's. He's 2 years old and isnt a very big cat, medium'ish

So for the problem that was "wrong" Is fleas supposely, (he gets flea bathes and stays inside almost 24/7). that its causing swelling in the spinal cord and when he moves it pulls at the brain and triggers a "seizure" like reaction (kinda like hitting your knee and kicking) So they told me he needed a Depo medrol shot every 2-3 months. $21, No problem they told me and how much it cost. They just left out the $50 blood test they did without my consent so now I owe my brother a nice $40. Which they told me right afterwards he didnt need, But great news everything on the test came out good asides from a bit low CHLO.

Oh and I guess I could agree with them he's under weight if their going by his species listed on the paper as "CANINE" He also said he doesnt know anything about the Swelling seizure like reactions (w/e you wanna name it) Never studied it, Seriously is this guy the vet they gave me for today?

Ok maybe it wasnt soo bad, but this guy seriously didnt seem very bright, and I am NOT satisfied with the results I got, so im waiting a few weeks to see if the shot does any good, if it doesnt im getting a new vet

But yeah asides from the - $21 shot, I paid about $100 for my vet to tell me my cat has fleas?!?!

Sorry to hear about your cat. I hope the shot will help the problem.

I was discussing vet bills with my mother tonight. I just had a tiny duckling at the vet- and she had an emergency with a dog. Sadly my little duckling didnt survive after an anesthetic- they had him in overnight- had an avain specialist look at him and try to manipulate the leg- and the bill was $90. I dont mind it so mind even considering the little one didnt survive. The knowledge I gained from the experience will help me in the future.
My mother had a dog with breathing problems- It was at the vet for 12 hours- placed into an oxygen tent- had 2 consultation fees and the bill was $1200 with no diagnoses of the problem.

My sister works for an animal welfare agency- and they have a vet that comes in from time to time and doesnt charge to see the abandoned and surrendered animals. He will also see staff animals - at a cost of a bottle of wine from his wine wish list.
Today when he saw my mothers dog- he asked which way she was driving home- he asked for a ride to the city central railway station. She was pleased to drive him- it was only a few minutes out of her way. That was the fee for diagnosing her dog with a heart condition.

Sorry to hear about your duckling! and yes I understand the costs and all, I just dont feel like he did all of the routine exam, and the way he was babbling on seriously either just didnt make since to me or he didnt know what he was talking about himself, and just another reason I dont like this vet much is I had to put my cat under my name (had him under my grans since we live together and she brings her cat in) Their trying to charge my gran $800 for a dog we/she dont even own or even heard of, Nor have we ever tooken a dog there. I just plainly dont feel comfortable with his results

pips&peeps :

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy him frontline and treat him every month?

Probably which im going to be doing, He wears a flea collar and I get some cheap flea stuff to.

It's a bright spot to know there are still folks out there who aren't all about money. What a fabulous reminder humans can be wonderful and generous souls! If only other folks would learn from this example!

Just take off the flea collar and stay away from the cheap stuff!! Use Frontline or Advantage- the second one stops the fleas' reproductive cycle and you never see them again!

Those collars and cheap meds are known to be toxic to many animals and countless pets have died from the over-the-counter, grocery store and pet store meds. Please stay away from those!

On second thought- Google the symptoms of your cat and the products it's been suffering: that may be the problem!

I think you have every right to question this vets approach to examining your cat- Surely cats and dogs are the most common animals seen at a clinic- so you would think that a competant vet should have fairly good knowledge about them.

I always ask to make an appointment with a specific vet when I have a duck to take in now- I had to go in on a day when she was not available and a normal vet looked at my duck- I had to tell them what to do based on what the avain specialist had done previously. They clearly had no clue how to treat a duck. I dont expect every vet to know every ailment or condition posible in every animal- but surely they should have some general knowledge.
