Tomorrow I’m getting some BSL chicks for tsc, I was there today and they had a good amount and the lady said they were mostly roos. And almost all that I could see were black with white chests. So my mom is letting me get some (not sure how many yet) to raise to butcher. I’m setting their brooder up tonight so it’s to temp for them tomorrow. When they don’t need to be in the brooder I will be putting them in a dog kennel run, it has an indoor section with a closable door to an outdoor run. About how old should they be when I move them there? I’m thinking six weeks, is that about right? I’ve raised ducklings before but not chicks, so I’m not super sure and don’t want to move them to early.

So with sexlinks it's the head spot that tells a male from a female (females have no headspot). At 8 weeks they should be heat independant, and depending on how many you get and how cold it gets at night, theoretically if weaned off it properly, by 6 weeks they could always keep each other warm

If BSL chick has a big spot on it's head, it is male. If it doesn't, it is female.

You can move the chicks outside when they have all their feathers except for head feathers. Chicks feather in a different rates so there is no exact age.

Ah good to know! The lady told me the females should be all black with little or no white. So I will keep that in mind for tomorrow. Thank you.

Looks like I won’t be gettin any bsl chicks, very sorry I wasn’t able to get a pic for you!
All good... life happens...( open the photo)

I have bsl and rsl I attached a picture of them 3 days old. My BSL were completely black no white on them. My RSL were harder to tell- you can see by the first picture the whiter chick was a Rooster.
As babies they need to have there temp at 90 degrees and move at about 5 degrees each week. You have to see how they react. Normally they can go out between 7-8 weeks. They need to be fully feathered. Also, it helps when the temperature in the brooder is the same outside.
just an FYI the chicks will outgrow the kennel quickly. I had my 6 chicks in there till 8 weeks. The second picture is them 2 weeks and the last picture is them at 4 weeks.
