Not vegetarian but...

We do about the same, we raise our own meat chickens, our own eggs and a garden for veggies. The neighbor behind us raises a lamb for us, we purchase a half of steer. We get a deer or 2 from local farmers. Our fruits come from the orchard across the road. Our breads to granola is made from scratch. We do occasionally go out to eat, but we have to watch what we get. It's usually seafood for me or when I am on the road, subway.

We are actually getting 1/3 of a cow. We went in on it with two other friends. We have another friend who is getting an 1/8 as they went in with three other families to purchase a half. We were given a free freezer a few years ago from a neighbor who was moving out but didn't want to take it with her. Now we finally get to put it to really good use!

Boyd, maybe check into miniatures. We sell miniature steers. they harvest out to be the size of half of a regular size steer.

but that's still half a cow

I suppose I could buy a larger freezer.. Hm.....

Hereford, how much grazing room do you need for a mini steer? Now you have me thinking.........

I have been doing some reading on Dexters...
I think you are looking at about 1 acer or so of quality pasture per cow.

depending on pasture, you can raise about 10 miniatures on 5 acres.

is that supplementing with hay when the heavy snows fall or is that 100% pasture?

hay. also we feed out steers with oats, grain, soy hulls, cotton seed hulls, and minimal corn

I've been trying to convert us to this as well. It's hard giving up some of those favorite foods though... hmmm... Chinese. It is just not as good made at home... dernit... not enough BTUs on my stove. But I'm trying, I know just where you're coming from.

Save money by not going out and get a better stove.

. One burner on our gas stove is giant.. I heat up an old heritage cast iron pan until it is smokin hot... And Yes! Chinese food is better at home... The key is to just flash fry the ingredients with that super hot pan.
