Not your normal RATS!

Could you use a 55 gallon drum like a bucket trap that is used for mice.

BUCKET TRAP FOR MICE:
A soup can with peanut butter spread on it, speared with a dowel of some type from flat bottom to flat top, so that it will spin. Insert the dowel into two small holes at the top of a 5 gallon bucket and then fill the bucket with water about 2" deep. Place a board that leads to the rim of the bucket near the dowel, or place the bucket trap near an object so they can climb to the rim. The mice fall in when they go for the peanut butter and drown. I use a long handled slotted spoon to remove them from the water to dispose of them. I also use anti-freeze during the winter, but then I make double sure the dags can't get to it.

We caught 28 mice in less than a month in just one 5 gallon bucket.

I have to place them where the dogs cannot get to them because they love peanut butter. But I have caught mice in them after the dog cleaned off the peanut butter.

To each his own. I personally dislike most chocolate. There are a very few chocolate things I like, but not many.

Rats are very intelligent

so traps do not work for very many catches before the rats figure out how to avoid them. Just One Bite is supposed to have very low secondary poisoning effect. Definitely use bait stations.

Check out http://roofrat.net/ (I realize that you probably do not have roof rats, although they ARE quite large; nevertheless, this site has lots of useful information on gaining control over rats.)

One of the formulations of this poison is also allowed on organic farms. I've used this and it works great. You need to keep everything away from the chickens and fresh.

try using soda. A friend used coke in a cup and they drank TONS and since they can't burp they aperently die she found 12 dead rats 2 days after just make sure your chicks don't drink it. I hope it works never personaly tried it myself since we don't have rats
