Never use Bird Wire, never settle for anything loose, just lost my fav hen because of that. Time to move on and learn. Need a more rigid wire.

Use 1/2 inch hardware cloth.

Absolutely no chicken wire. There should be no opening into the coop greater than 1/2". Everything should have the 1/2" hardware cloth tightly secured using screws with fender washers or heavy duty poultry staples.

1/2" HWC should be the minimum.

I'm actually considering nailing PT lattice strips over my HWC on the run on my coop in progress. Still on the fence on that. Seems a bit overkill since we haven't had any issues with predators so far.

Sorry you learned the hard way. Chicken wire is good for keeping chickens out of my garden, but not for keeping predators away from chickens.

I got it: first build a better run, and finish my coop, then come spring, buy 5 more sapphire gem pullets to quench my sadness… lol. (Maybe chicken math will make it 10).
