November 2016 Hatch-a-long!!

Pics
So I have 12 of 18 eggs that that are growing right the other 6 are questionable so excited though the 6 BCM eggs I got are growing great yaaay

My 7 month old Khaki Campbell decided to go broody! We just assumed that she had stopped laying due to the cold weather here in VT. Well upon cleaning out the coop I found her nest filled with eggs. Suprise!! This is the first time we have had a nesting duck! I'm excited, but trying not to get my hopes too high as it is really cold, and she is so young. Because she was so sneaky, I don't know how long into gestation they are...
Help and advice appreciated!!

Ducklings right before Christmas would be so amazing!!

I have Marans in now and idk if I will have 7 babies or none drives me nuts lol good luck!! I did have one stinker I caught luckily tho before it blew

I see nothing in the Marans except the very dark shadow. I'm going to try looking again later this week and smelling the eggs too. Lockdown for me is Monday.

I just read your post to my fiancé and he wants to know if we just became best friends (like the line from the movie step brothers) lol I just got a stern talking to about ordering more eggs while he was out hunting all weekend all I hear is blah blah I wasted 2 days sitting in peace and quiet....

My first batch ever hasn't even hatched yet and I am planning on what to put in there next. Should be a giant warning on this forum. WARNING! VERY ADDICTIVE!

Definitely!
If for some reason you're not addicted to the hatching, then you'll at least get a bad case of "chicken math." Then there's people like me who have BOTH.

You must have been hearing a chorus of broody screams every time you opened the coop!

Oddly enough, I only have one who is noisy. She would start telling us off before she could even see us. The rest couldn't care less about us being there unless we try to touch them.

I am rather wishing now that instead of starting our other broody over, I had divided the eggs from the other nest. I didn't do that because I did not expect the remaining 4 to hatch. I thought maybe 1 would actually hatch. Had I divided them, one would have 7, the other would have 8, and I am betting they would all have made it.

I am very sad today because my little Fighter did not make it. I am not sure what happend, but this is what I suspect happened. The momma went outside, but 3 chicks were left behind. They huddled together in a nest box... one of the favorite nest boxes... my little one I think may have gotten stepped on, and another chick got pecked and injured, its face is pretty bloodied up. The other escaped injury, and was huddled close to the injured one just crying. Also, the three little black ones got chased away by the momma. So now I have a box set up in my bathroom with 5 little chicks in it till I can get the brooder set up.

I have been able to give water to the injured one, but what should I put on its injuries? And what else should I get to give it? I am debating back and forth between doctoring it and putting it down. It still seems strong, but it cannot see out of one eye (though I think the eye is actually still there).

I know the momma is still young and inexperienced, but I am not at all impressed with her mothering. I have not had these things happen with any of my other broodies.
