Oh you guys I guess I was wrong about the bantams hatching at day 19...they didn't and now I'm so worried. I put them in lockdown so early and now it is day 20 or 21 I don't remember and not a pip. I hope I didn't kill them from not turning them and upping the humidity too early. I should have asked those of you that know about bantams before I did anything. Can you send me those good hatching vibes?

I am sending you "good hatching vibes". Remember nature is amazing... my hatch has been a comedy of errors since the onset and i have one cute fluff ball to show for it. I just checked the coop after getting the children off to school and peeked in on the broody mum and heard a peeping from under her. One egg has a pip and the chick is making a racket from inside. The others are still and quiet for now. This is our first ever hatch and the coop is full of inquisitive hens that are usually free ranging by this time of day. The Queen of the Coop was inside near the Broody, squawking up a storm. It's BABY DAY! I called my 4 sons on their way to school to tell them what i found and they were cheering in the car.

You didn't kill them by locking down early. With staggered hatches, I've locked down one or two days early with no ill effects at all. In fact, I've gotten better hatch rates from the younger group, which tells me something, though with that small a sample size, it doesn't tell me too much.

Bantams take the same amount of time as any other, so at 20 or 21, I would just wait, watch, and be patient. Every hatch there is a time that I spend looking at the eggs, sure they are all dead, and in a few hours things start to happen.

But remember, even if nothing does happen, you didn't kill them by locking down early.

The 'almost hatched' egg is Duct Tape!! See, never underestimate the power of nature. "DT" is almost out, and the bantam egg, which had a series of hairline cracks in it for the last three days, is chirping from inside, and there is chirping coming from another brown egg. That leaves one that is quiet and no signs of hatch at all. Currently, out of 6 = 1 dropped early and broken, 1 hatched a week early due to confusion, 1 almost hatched, 2 chirping but not pipped, and 1 with no signs at all - at least not yet. I am attaching a pic that shows the duct tape egg opening. It is a bit blurry - sorry, didn't want to bother the Mum.

I am sooo sad. I went to check progress and the Duct Tape chick that was almost completely hatched and chirping an hour ago is dead

This is my first hatch so i do not know all the perils involved. Upon inspection it appears that the umbilical cord was still attached to the shell and had hemorrhaged and pulled out of the chick. Can anyone give me any information regarding what happened? Pure joy has turned to sadness. There is still chirping coming from the two other eggs but this small dead chick is incredibly upsetting. Is there anything i could have done to help it?

Put that down to "stuff happens." I had that problem a lot when I was hatching eggs on their sides. Under a broody, you can't really change that of course. It may have just been an effect of what happened earlier that he tried to hatch before his time. I wish he'd made it for you.
