Sorry that was a visit from Sara. I'm sure you know but just in case you didn't, I thought I'd let you know about breeding 2 frizzles together. I haven't done it but have read a lot about it because i have 2 boys and a girl. If 2 frizzles produce a chick it's feathers will be VERY brittle and break off if you touch them. I have read lots of people saying it can cause death. After looking into it further and writing to people that have done it, it doesn't appear to be true. Extra curly very brittle feathers and possible issues from that, but not death. I don't know if it is every chick or some chicks. I haven't decided if I'm going to do it or not mine are only 10 weeks. Do you have pictures of your new chickens?
Feel free to tell me "DUH!"LOL, Hi Sara!!I did NOT know that about Frizzles as they are a new breed to me. Very good to know though.
But maybe ok to cross with another one of my Bantam then? Like a straight Cochin? Def don't want to create sick birds if it can be prevented. If I did cross with a straight Cochin I would get SOME frizzles, just not all, right? I'm new to this breeding stuff! Thanks for the info! The only pics I have now are on my phone and can't load them. They were sent to me by the current owner. I am going to pick them up tomorrow evening and I will share pics for sure!! I also need to share some of my other feathered babies!! Haven't posted any yet! Especially my 4 week old because I would LOVE opinions on rooster or hen!
Quote: most likely the chick will hatch on it's own........when they pip the shell it's so they can breath not because they are ready to hatch...I really think your temps are off some! don't give up on the others since it seems they are late bloomers..
let us know!!![]()
won't tell you DUH because I do appreciate the advice, but I do know that part! LOL I raised exotic birds for years before I got into chickens (and still have my sweet African Grey) and it's the same for them. You never know what kind of plague a bird could carry until you give it some time to show!Feel free to tell me "DUH!"But, you do know you are supposed to the new birds in quarantine away from any others for a month? I didn't know before and paid a lot for learning the hard way.![]()
I'm starting to think the same! I was going to order a new thermometer/hydrometer but I'm hoping to find one locally so I can get it in my bator right away. I really think something has to be off.most likely the chick will hatch on it's own........when they pip the shell it's so they can breath not because they are ready to hatch...I really think your temps are off some! don't give up on the others since it seems they are late bloomers..

Quote: there are some great articles if you do a search. unfortunately my brain doesn't retain details well anymore ( especially when I have a headache like today) but the articles cover the frizzle gene and how many are too many, things like that. I know of one person that has a "Frazzle" and the poor little things feathers break off so easily, she was worried it wouldn't be able to handle cold weather she's so bald....I had read that the genes that cause the damaged feathers can affect the health of the bird....but I don't know! the little chicken I referred to doesn't have any other issues but she's "ugly"![]()
Yes, the frizzle and non frizzle will have some frizzle babies. WHen I bought eggs that were from a frizzle and non frizzle, I had 6 regular and 2 frizzles. I don't know if 25% is the norm, but that was what I got. I love my frizzles. They get cold easier too. I had to keep my babies in the brooder much longer because their feathers don't trap the heat like other birds. I am learning about them as well. There seems to be a lot of wrong info out there about them with nothing to back it up. They are super cute chickens. I love them. Can't wai to see the pictures.LOL, Hi Sara!!I did NOT know that about Frizzles as they are a new breed to me. Very good to know though.

Yellow chicks seem to have extra cuteness power.Single little salmon Faverolles bantam chick hatched! I've done a staggered hatch, since these are eggs from my own Fav girls, and have a chick due almost everyday for the next..well, until my bator can't hold any more. Muahaha. Next one due in a few days (I do have other young chicks to keep this guy company when he hits the brooder).
He's a beautiful little thing, too. Fluffy muff, heavily feathered legs and toes just like his parents, FLUFFY!!
