November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

OMG!~!! I got home late and am NOT paying attention! Heard a little peep...and got the flashlight to see one of the EE eggs bust open and a chick pop out! One other zippin' like crazy, two more pipped. I'M NOT GETTING ANY SLEEP TONIGHT!

YEAH!! I am so excited for you!! this is the best part!! especially the first one lol
keep us posted!

seriously.. put some tape on the door of the incubator right now. DON'T open it. I am questioning if I caused chick deaths by opening the incubator.. next time I'm duct taping it shut! ;)

>One of the wyandotte chicks. What do you think this will turn out to be color-wise? It's supposed to be BLR...
I read that the down feathers on the butt indicate the lacing (this one looks blue to me!) can you post more pics of all your BLRWs? I hatched some too, would love to see yours :)

> Marans...splash or BCM?
BCM can be blue copper or black copper, right..? This one is not black copper, could be splash or blue copper marans.

I think blue copper marans

> Who can resist a sleepy baby?
OMG I love this one!! too much.. this is a great photo background and surface also

<3

>This is my other wyandotte...looking for BLR.
Interesting.. this one is quite different than my BLRWs.. not sure what this one is, but not blue laced red. Splash laced red is another possibility from the Blue parents. is there anything on it's back?

here's my BLRWs. Some look more red and some look more black.. all have gray (should be blue as an adult) down, the flash does wash it out a little bit.

There are 2 chicks, 7 pips. There are also three latches on the door of the incubator. I'm not tempted in any way at this time. That will come later I'm sure!

I need some advice on what happened in this hatch. I had 8 eggs that were candled and had chicks growing. Went into lockdown day 18 raised humidity to 60-65% temps steady at 99-100* on day 22 heard chirping from inside egg, 24 hrs later no pipping. Waited until day 24 never heard anymore chirping and never had any external pipping. I broke open all the eggs and had 3 internal pips, yolks absorbed but never hatched. Others fully developed but didn't absorb yolk and never internally pipped. I noticed one of them had the shell stuck to its head. I'm wondering if humidity was too low?? I'm checking hygrometer now. Any suggestions? Look at pic
My best advice would be...use 3 thermometers, and 3 hygrometers so you are certain of your humidity and temperature. keep a good written record of what the temp and humidity is each day, so you can look back post-mortem and see where you might have had spikes or drops. Also, opening the incubator too much... really be honest with yourself if you opened it too much, excess ventilation can be deadly.

Here is a good resource for determining what went wrong with each egg: http://msucares.com/poultry/reproductions/trouble.html

*hugs* I'm sorry, I hope your next hatch will be better!

Mine that was born with yolk passed away this evening. She had rebounded and I really thought we were out of the woods and then completely out of the blue she went weak again. She was very quickly gone :( I buried her under some very special daffodil bulbs that my husband gifted me. Pardon the poetic sappiness, but I'll be happy to see something beautiful and yellow in the spring because she was a very pretty little yellow marans chick.

I'm really sorry, I completely understand your feeling.. and I think that is a wonderful idea to plant them under the bulbs.

I'm just so sorry

I love sappiness!

seatmon...it looks like your humidity may have been too high during the first part of incubation....I'm so sorry

what were you humidity and temps? how many hydrometers were you relying on?
