November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Oh dear. Seven eggs have pipped this morning... I hope they all make it...

look up sex links in your search engine...make sure you put sex link chickens

or you won't be pleasantly surprised....and even at that make sure the children aren't around...but that's what you've created...I'm anxious to find out too!!
What you have crossed is the beginnings of autosexing chickens. First generation (F1) only the pullets are barred as I understand it. This is a Rhodebar Improvement Chart.

(Post office called to say they are in Sheridan...) So...Shipped Egg Setters...I will let them rest 24 hours big end up. What is the consensus for setting them and NOT turning for 1-3 days? What do you all do? What about letting them hatch big end up vs. on their side at lockdown?

Farmer Viola, are we doing sychronized setting (gratefully) on Thanksgiving Day? KINK FM 102 radio always plays Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" (extended version) at high noon on TG Day. What do you think?

Huh. Thanks for the great info! So as you understand it, "he" is really a "she?" LOL
I misspoke. I should have said only the pullets have 2 doses of the barring gene. From the patterning it looks like a cockerel to me but I AM A NEWBIE. What did the chick look like as a hatchling? The wild type chipmunk striped ones are pullets, the buff ones with the white head spot are cockerels. You might want to go see the Rhodebar thread? Lots of photos there.

My 9 blue slate turkey eggs have been in lockdown since Saturday...today was/is day 28. The 'bator was running a little hot so I set them 1 day early, and sure enough yesterday, one lil lavender popped out....but so far no more pips, or even a little rolling like there was just yesterday. They are ebay eggs and I paid a lot for them so if I only get one from this hatch I'm going to cry! Will keep everyone posted!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Okay.. one of my egg shipments arrived in the mail.. and one didn't. :( I'm stressing out because that means they won't be here til Friday, and I want to set them at the same time. I don't have a tracking# so I can't even see where they are at. They are coming from CA so they were supposed to be here today, it's not far at all! So it looks like I will be setting Saturday.. if you wanted to wait we could sync up, but if I were you, I probably couldn't wait! LOL!

Also..tell me again that these eggs I have in hand won't lose viability by waiting? sigh..

As for the rotating -- I say candle them, if detatched air cells, then no turning while they rest. If the ACs look fine, then I prop the whole dozen up on 1 side to turn. If they ARE detatched, I think that not turning for the first couple days of incubation is a good idea. Edit: Just candled my eggs, and all but 3 appear to have detatched air cells.. 1 is cracked. Crappppppp!!!!!

pic from today's GREENS FRENZY!!! chicks love greens.

they're already getting so big! One of the silkacanas has vulture hocks, and VERY feathered feet. he's my favorite silkie, I call him Disco cause it looks like he has bell bottoms on from some angles with those hocks

but I do think he is a little roo.. what do you think? I want to keep them ALL!!
