November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Its hatch day! I have one advanced chick hollering from inside the egg but no external pip yet. I'm very nervous as to what I should do! I've read and read and still not sure. going to just wait patiently

To I woke up and found Max lying on her side stretched out, cold, eyes closed. I picked her up and she barely moved. I don't know why. She was perfect 45 minuutes earlier. I heated her up, fed her, gave her nutri drench and she is acting much better but now I have to leave her for the first time since she hatched. I will be gone about 6 hours. I will be so worried.

This is a good thing....really.........it means your chick has poked it's little beak into the air sack.
Exactly what it is meant to do.........Just give it time to finish it's work.
This is what I get a super clean house............have to keep bus to stop myself from
messing with the incubator or egg....................

Check back with us and good luck........................

I have 5 going in to lockdown wednesday and im already looking for some good quality ameraucana eggs!!!! Ive wanted this breed since I first started raising chickens. Im looking in Texas so I can avoid shipping...is it crazy im willing to drive 5-6 hrs for hatching eggs???

I also lost 2 eggs to other hens in the nest - one got cracked and slowly died, and then one got crushed. 6 still in there - I put some non-fertile eggs in another box, and now the non-broodies are using it. I hope it keeps working.

Someone else will know the answer better than I, but I think "Lock down" is for the incubators, not the broodies. But, in your situation, it sounds like moving the broody to her own enclosed pen is a good idea if possible, and sooner the better. I probably should, but I haven't figured out a set-up I'm happy with, so I'm taking a risk. My nest is low, though, so the chickies should be ok if they hatch.

Agreed.lockdown is for incubators...............My main concern is that day old chicks can fall out of the nest...then get to cold or killed by the other hens..........
Unfortunately they will do that sometimes thinking it is a mouse or whatever.........
I would try to move her again. Is there anyway you could put a small piece of fencing or???????? something to stop her from leaving. I put mine in a dog kennel,
close the door for two days until they figure out it is home.....Hope all goes well for you............
