November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

I have six eggs under one of my banties(this is her first attempted hatch) and i checked the eggs today and she has gotten them a little poopy... dont really know how since she has been leaving the box to eat drick and poop. Is this normal? will the chicks be okay? Its day 13 and when i candled them all had lil vessels developing in there like they should....

you can hold mama and clean the nest a little...just flake off any big debris from the eggs...don't get them wet or rub them...

she's more interested in her eggs at this point! hold her while you move the nest so she can see them...she'll be panicked to get back on them and relieved when you put her on them

What about when she wants to take her break? That's when I'm worried she'll freak out and possibly damage the eggs.
She usually flies around a bit and takes a dust bath within the larger coop at least once a day, and the other broody covers for her.

If you're just worried about the chicks not being able to get down and up, wait until they start hatching to move her. Once she hears them peeping and has a chick or two she's not going to get up and and leave them when you move her. So once they start hatching you can move them to the area you had set aside for her and this time she'll stay.

Thanks, that's helpful. The nest is low. I'm mostly worried about them getting accidentally crushed by my brahma - either as eggs or chicks - inside or outside the nest. Other than that, I have a small flock that gets along well, and I don't think they'll attack them.

decided to sneak in a candle before i got any pips..only caught 3 wayos moving around couldnt see much in the marans but air cells but the egdes of some air cells were moving so im hoping......... culled 6 wyaos and 1 maran egg... 2 of the eggs some how missed first cull and were infertile..and missed several midway quitters (probly because i had help...) then desided to candle all my other eggs since so many of those were bad.. SOOO glad i did one of the EE was bubling ewwwww it went away fast.. and after throuly scrubbing up... i candled and culled several infertile silkie and wyao eggs from (oct 15th hatch).. and i still cant see squat in the EE other than the air cells..(oct 12th hatch) i need to modify my "big lumens" candler to not be so hot if i use it i do 1 egg and cool before moving on.....i did find a flashlight that was 500 lumens but i not be paying THAT much for a flash light lol found lots at under 100 lumens then nothing between about 112 and 500 lumens.. so either you just want it just not dark or you want to signal mars go figure...

Oh. my. god- I just had the biggest smile on my face! I am actually even more excited knowing you have siblings to mine! I will be posting a lot as well! When did you start turning the eggs after you received them in the mail?

Well..bad news..

I was getting concerned for my overdue 2 cornish bantam and 4 silkie/showgirl eggs, so I went to make artificial pips for them. When I did that, I noticed they were shrink-wrapped, so I busted them open quick as I could, but it was too late. 2 beautiful splash silkies, 1 black silkie, 1 black showgirl hit so sad, I was desperate to get showgirls out of this hatch), fully developed, yolks mostly absorbed, just shrink wrapped and couldn't pip out. One cornish bantam fully formed but yolk not absorbed, also dead. One last remaining cornish bantam is alive and in the shell, but is malpositioned and pipped at the wrong end and keeps hitting blood vessels when it knocks at the shell. Don't expect that one to make it through the night. Which gives me a whopping 3/20 (4 if this little guy gets lucky) hatch there. Darn homemade styrobator loses humidity too quickly. 3 is better than my last round of shipped eggs, I guess..0/15.
12 quail eggs also overdue. One hatched a few hours ago. One more pipped and rocking. Nothing from the others. Started with 32..
On the bright side, I have 4 healthy new babies and one of my new Salmon Faverolle bantam gals I picked up at a poultry show yesterday gave me a pretty pink egg today. Got a trio, so I'm going to collect up a few more and pop them in the incubator to check for fertility!

I'm sorry, that sounds terrible. Maybe get a new incubator before trying again? I know I couldn't handle it.
