it's so nice of you to look all that up!!

Pendragon-- Thanks for all the info!!! I'll have to look into them. The real rare breeds I wanted no one seemed to have close by. Ebay eggs are definitely expensive, but so far I've been pretty lucky with hatch rates-- a lot are the average 50% but I've had some that were almost 100%. I've heard a lot of horror stories about people getting all duds and rotten eggs. I try to look for sellers close by and with high ratings. Ironically, I have only done one hatch with local eggs from another BYCer (who has high hatch rates on her own) but out of 30 eggs only ONE hatched! Haha that was by far my worst hatch rate ever. I don't know if something went awry on her end, my end or both but I was definitely disappointed!

Heidisgran- Sounds great! My son wants a black sex link chicken really bad, but we only have so much space.

what rare breeds are you looking for? Sorry for your cruddy hatch last time. Hope things go better next time.

My flock is pretty much full for now (we live in town so I can only have so many-- which we are technically over if you count meat birds & turkeys which I don't....) I'm doing my last hatch of the year, but the breeds I bought as hatching eggs this year were Isbars from greenfire farms line, blue Breda, blue copper Marans, Lav Orpingtons, Exchequer Leghorns, Appenzeller Spitzhauben (which unfortunately were killed by a predator), blue Ameraucana, and in the incubator are Blue Salmon Favorelles, Super Blue Layers, crested Swedish Flower hens, & some Marraduna Basques (which I really don't know anything about they were included in my last egg order)
And some standards we ordered-- my husband wanted a RIR, daughter loves Barred Rocks, my son chose a Golden Laced Wyandotte, and a silkie.
The one we hatched from local eggs is a lavender frizzled olive egger (though I can't confirm egg color since it's only a couple months old) It's also supposed to be standard size, but it's pretty small, really hoping I didn't somehow get a bantam on her!

... My favorite color is blue if you can't tell

I one day hope to have a flock of just red, white, blue, black, silver mottled and splash. Have it started with Delawares, Black Australorps, New Hamshires, California Grey, Silver Grey Dorkings, my avatar girl who is Dorking over Polish and my broody is sitting on 8 Silver Penciled Wyandotte eggs.

I would like to add Mottled Java, Pita Pinta, Breda, and BBS Ameraucauna but am not in a hurry.

Hope your OE is truely an OE and that she is LF.

Thank you SO much for all the research!!! Have you ever bought from any of sellers listed (I don't know how you found that many!!!)? Do they sell hatching eggs versus live chicks/chickens? I had a horrible experience and now I will only hatch my own.

My back story: When we first started out with chickens I didn't know much about them. I raised my flock from mail order chicks then saw a pretty blue laced red wyandotte at a flock swap. It looked healthy and I was so ignorant to poultry I brought it home and put it in with my flock. (Didn't know about quarantine, I'm a city girl that wanted home grown eggs)
2 weeks later I saw it had infectious coryza (determined that by this site), and pulled her out from the rest. Started injecting all my birds in the chest with Tylan (got over my needle phobia real quick). Within a couple weeks after that it was evident it spread to my others. I was told the ones that didn't show symptoms could still be carriers so it'd be unethical to give them away or rehome. My husband was deployed to Afghanistan so my vegetarian self had to mercy slaughter my entire flock of pet chickens by myself.
I swore off chickens completely, but I'm sure you know how addicting raising them can be, so I started over this Spring with a new flock.
We even grew some meat birds (which my husband was delegated to slaughter I would only cook them for my kids).
But I am super paranoid now about any birds. We are only one 1/3 of an acre so I've heard even if I quarantine in that small of an area it could still spread.

By the way candling quail eggs is hard becoz when you look in they tiny eggs you cant see a difference until day 17 when the air sack appeares
