Ugh, disaster!! Help! After removing the suspect cracked egg this morning, I came home after being gone all day to a different mess. The other legbar egg had been crushed in the nest, there was goop on most of the other eggs and another was kicked out of the nest, and one of my broodies had egg mess on her. 2 eggs and one broody did not appear dirty. I cleaned up the nest, cleaned up the broody, and wiped down the dirty eggs with a damp cloth and a little alcohol.

I think the egg got crushed by another hen laying in the nest, but I'm not sure of that because when I got home, the coop door was partially open, and a wire fence I have protecting some plants nearby was knocked down. It had been windy, but I don't think the wind could have opened that particular door. All of the hens were fine, so I'm at a total loss as to what could have happened, other than it was just a coincidence and another hen crushed an egg. The egg had good development and didn't smell bad - I don't think it was a bacterial explosion.

So, questions: is the whole clutch a loss? Should I just keep candling and smelling the eggs? Do I need to separate out the broodies? The only option I have immediately available is a portable (cloth) dog crate I can put them in, inside the larger coop. I think that will stress out the broodies, and I'm worried it will break them, but maybe I have to do it?

Thanks for your help. I'm so sad. 10 days left to go, 6 eggs left, I hope.

sounds like you've done all you can for the eggs...
I separate my broodies.....I had 2 at the same time this last summer I was going to let them handle everything but when the first egg pipped the hen that didn't have pipping eggs eat it...before I could get to it and stop her!
now everyone gets their own space...that way they don't have other hen climbing in the nest box causing trouble...the dog crate in the corner or something sounds like a plan

woke up this morning to two tiny serema chicks. Today is day 21 and I still have 5 blrw,5 Swedish flowers, 1 favorelle , 11 seremas,4 buff silkies,2 party silkies, and 7 paint silkies. so far have 2 seremas that hatched and 4 silkies 6 seremas and 1 Swedish flower that have pipped. so excited. Husband said this should be it cause I have 4 groups of different aged chicks that im trying to keep separated cause they pick on each other and im running out of room. but still have 6 tolbunt polish eggs coming in a week or two. lol told him we just have to build more partitions for the chicken coop. im addicted

I can't wait to have a baby from my own chickens.

I set 26 texas a&m quail eggs last Saturday. It's been driving me nuts so I candled 7 of them I saw very distinct veins in 3/7 but nothing in the remaining 4. It gives me hope since this is only my second time incubating and my first time with shipped eggs. Although I was wishing for an extremely high hatch rate... We can dream can't we? Lol
