November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

I am so beyond sad. My eggs in the bator are all goners. I keep the humidity in the 30's as advised due to the bator I have and on sunday I still have live babies and last night I candled only to reveal dark lifeless masses or almost transparent eggs. No movement from anyone or veining. And they were my catdance silkies.

I'm gonna take a long hyedas from hatching in the bator. Too many losses and almost nothing to show for it. I'm in the hole, financially and emotionally.

Sorry you have lost them, but are you sure they are dead? How bright is the light you use for candling? Mine is not all that bright, so towards the end mine just look like dark masses, I can only see movement on the rare occasion, and that has to be close to the air cell.

Have you checked any to be sure before they are all thrown out?

I'm with Ben...Are you sure they're gone? What day are you on? I've had great movement throughout my incubation but the closer I got to lockdown, the darker the mass and the slower the movement. I started lockdown Sunday night and only had movement in five out of twenty-two. I was very worried. However, this morning I have three chicks and five more pips...NONE of which were the five that had movement Sunday. It's almost like they were settling in to hatch and the ones that we're moving still need a little more settling. Give them more time.

Two white silkies and one buff silkie have hatched and I have five more pips! What a fun day!! Even my daughter-in-law (who hates my chickens) came to watch for a while.

I re-read the Sally Sunshine thread on helping and am giving the chick that has pipped at the wrong end a little more time. It's membrane still looks moist and it's moving so...yep, a little more time.

I thought I remembered reading that somewhere! Considering two others that looked the same made it to full development and died at hatch, it would make sense, but my little Brinsea holds temperature like a rock and never got over 100. :idunno So maybe it was a nutritional deficiency on the mothers' part or something. Thanks, though! :)
Good luck! They're so addicting! :p
Do you have a secondary hygrometer to read the temp/humidity? I have read about issues with Brinseas being off - all incubators can be. I remember someone in one of my hatch alongs having one that turned out to be like 4 degrees off. I didn't find that thread but did find a couple others.

I JUST read about this (missing eyes) http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00008570/00001/6j It says it is from high incubator temp during days 1 - 6 and/or low oxygen. You may need to lower your temp a little maybe.

This is a great, thanks for sharing.

What day are you on? Chicks have periods of movement and rest. They rest to save up their energyfor the next big step. Rest, pip internally, rest, pip shell, rest, zip and some take a break while pipping. I have had some stop moving on day 16 resting up for the big event.
