November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

11 of 13 chicks have hatched! The all have slightly protruding navals, but I think that is because I had to up the humidity to 70 - 75% since I had my two assisted chicks with exposed membrane. Both of those assisted chicks are out and looking great. I have one other one that had no issues but seems really weak compared to the rest. After he zipped he sat in the egg for a really long time and seemed like he could hardly lift his own head. So may lose that one. But it looks like 13 of 13 will make it through hatching.
Congratulations, nice work!! I demand pictures!! :)
What is the cause of protruding navals? Too much moisture? Does it have to do with yolk absorption?

I have been having a lot of problems with BYC. I inly typed that last one once. I clicked on quote but this is all that came up. I have been having a lot of problems with the quote as well. It's getting really annoying.

I have a 2 month old frizzle bantam cochin that is mating with Jack, my 2 month old mix with a bad leg. I also have a RIR that is 4 month old, trying to mate with my laying hens. Now I understand when people say it looks like a rodeo. One of my older roosters is trying to mate with my 4 month old hen. No where near laying. My 2 month old Mille Fleur D'Uccle is mating with anything that moves. Up until 2 weeks ago I never saw any of them even trying to hold their hand, now it is like chicken porn everytime I walk outside. What is going on? I feel sorry for some of them. Poor Cinnamon. She just started laying and she is all of their favorites. She is always sneaking in the house. I don't blame her. It's the only time she gets rest.

ROFL OMG too funny!! chickens holding hands..

The excitement is building... soo impatient. :) Silkie egg #1 is 13 days today, and silkie egg #4 is 7 days, so I candled both this morning. #4 is alive, yay! I saw a floaty eye/head and many veins. #1 is ahead of all my other eggs, so it's showing me what to expect out of my good eggs later on :) Today, I could see it's HEAD and it's BEAK and even little feathers sticking out!!! THIS IS SO COOL!! Only 8 days to go on that one.. I do hope that my broody stays on for the rest of them, even after the early guy hatches.

Silkies are great! I love how sweet they are, yet how sassy they can be. Such great little balls of fluff. Do you have some yourself?
I did have a partridge silkie when I first got hens. She would go broody at the drop of a hat, swear like a trooper and bossed the others around, even though everyone wasctwice her sise. She had a black topknot. Looked like a russian dancer in a fur hat. Always made me laugh.
;) maybe I need some more....thinking about her.... o.0

I got out of the shower and found orange liquid on the floor. I couldn't think of what it could be or how it got there. After a few minutes pretending to be a CSI, I figured it out.

My dog let in my chicken. My chicken went into the kitchen and tried to land on a shelf that was full. She knocked over a gallon jar of Limoncello I was making. (Except I was making it Manderine orange this time.) There is barely any left. That is $30 of alcohol. $25 of Manderine oranges and hours zesting them. Months letting it sit. I am so frustrated. I think she is looking for a good place for a nest because 'I think' she might be wanting to go broody. It's the only reason I can think of that she is on such a hunt for the perfect nest. If she found a good spot in the house, I'd let her with the weather getting colder. It's Cinnamon of course. She just laid her 3rd egg and it is pretty good sized. I love that pain in the butt.

Max and I are off to the bakery outlet and to get Chinese food for dinner. Max was all excited to go, then I detoured to write this real quick. Now he is sitting patiently by my feet. I have got the craziest bunch of animals. Maybe my personality has rubbed off on them a bit because I don't know anyone else that has chickens that insist on laying in the house and a turkey that has to sleep in a bed after eating ice cream for desert and drinks out of a straw. Or is this more normal than I thought?
