I always think it through to the end of the road...with everything that can go wrong (infertiles, quitters, non-pip/zippers, failure to thrive, etc.) it's like some bizarre kind of insurance. AND I'm willing to raise ALL of them if I should be so lucky. I have orders for Marans pullets as soon as I can identify them as layers, so I have to hatch them if they are going to get to the saleable stage. The extra cockerels are meat and if there's ever too much of that people will always buy or barter OG chicken. Depending on how the shipped eggs hatch, I won't need to set again until spring. I have rationalized my decisions like a champ.

The truth is, it's a miracle we can put a breakfast item into a warm box and 21 days later a fuzzy life pops out that will make more breakfast or dinner or a companion or cheap entertainment or lessons for your children/grandchildren or whatever your birds are to you. The final count is 48. Last time I set 39 but a lot of infertiles and a few quitters and stuck chicks means there are 14 chicks in the barn right now. It's all good, right?

We have a BABY!!!!!!!! He/she is either black/silver/blue?? Came from a blue/green egg but could be a cross. It started unzipping and was resting when I took a break to get the kiddos something to eat. Heard loud peeps and ran back to see a chick half outta the shelf!! Can't wait to show you pic when the baby fluffs up! Now it just needs to cheerlead for it's siblings to get pippin!!!!!

2 more weeks before I have any more

black chicks can hatch out silver and change color, that is their baby fuzz, congrats! I have little ones coming on the 18th- my blue/splashed maran hen laid an egg, and I got some fertile neighbor eggs that will be mystery chicks. I hatched out her mystery chicks before, now they run up to me and peck me! I like it!

DeannaA - that vid is adorable!!! I can't figure out how to get mine up...will try later.
How do you get away with letting a turkey sleep in bed with you? Matt's pretty tolerant of my weirdness but he would never let me try that one....

P.S. I think it's awesome tho.

Oh and what is your Grey's name? Mine is Nadirah aka Na-Na. She'll be 3 in January.

I have a Grey also. His name is clark. He is (we think) about 20. He was a rescue. SO much fun. We have owned him for almost 11 years.
