November/December "Hatch-a-Long"

Woke up to still no more pips, just my one little chick still this morning. It will be day 23 at 3:00 today. There is one egg that I KNOW if moving. I just don't understand. All but 2 of my eggs looked GREAT at lockdown. Really starting to lose some hope at this point. If anything I expected early hatchers because of my high temp spikes. I did have one time where the temp dipped a little also tho. I'mjust trying to keep my hopes up for my other 12 eggs at this point. If I have yet another 1/13 hatch I don't know if I will have the heart to keep hatching. I LOVE it and it's very addicting, but I KNOW there were babies in those eggs. It would break my heart if something happened to 12 of them that far into the process!

I know this is very hard but one of the things that will help you is....opening the eggs to see if you can tell what killed them...there are signs that you can study...broken yolk, dry, wet etc...
don't give up on your hatch! quite honestly I would have candled them so I would know how they are doing in there!

Oh, I have two pips this morning! I missed one.

And my nephew, who just turned 3, will be visiting today, so he'll get to see the baby chicks.

Many people do not give up until day 25. Try Wait! I generally do not mess with the eggs in lockdown, but you might want to candle to see what is going on in there.

I just wanted to let you know.. I had 8 of 9 eggs hatch who were all welsummers and they all took until day 23! not sure why! but it IS still possible..
have you candled and looked for an internal pip? there is also the float test, but I only do that on eggs that I am pretty sure are dead. if they have pipped internally, the float test can drown then. good luck and keep us posted!! *hugs*

Well...how did it all work out? Still just one incubator in the house?

Ummm.. yeah.. I am a crazy person. I ordered the 2nd incubator so I will have a separate hatcher. I'm wondering if it's even necessary though, they were set 1 day apart and I know you have an egg you put in 1 day late? But regardless, I'm glad I will have a separate hatcher now so I can always do staggered hatches. that's right, not stopping here!!

Over in the Detached air cell thread, someone advised me that I could lay the non-detached shipped eggs on their side. I think I am going to play it safe and keep them in the carton, as per the shipped egg instructions. But I thought of your question Ihilani, about keeping them upright, and she swears that she gets a better hatch putting them on their side in the bator and hand turning. She says only carton upright the detached air cells. My thinking is that more could be detached or damaged than I thought on my first candle. I was very gentle and didn't turn the eggs upside down or anything. so I am treating them all as detached.

this type is my favorite proven incubator. I have 2 fully made incubators, like this above one, 2 waiting to be made (1/2 made)

and this one,

this big one was too big to dry hatch. I like the small ones because I figured them out, on this big one I may have to play with it. I like the looks so I won't give up.

Uh...I put in 7 eggs on Day 1...

Since I need more experience candling, I'm following the advice of my Sportsman incubator mentor who has hatched thousands of eggs (mostly his own, but some shipped also). Hand turning is not an option for my lifestyle, so I am keeping the shipped eggs in the carton. I am pretty sure I had some chicks that had to work WAY harder to hatch because of their earlier hatchmates kicking, rolling, and otherwise spinning them around while they were trying to pip. So I'm thinking it might actually be easier for them to get themselves out of an upright shell than try to fine the "top" of the aircell over and over as they are continuously moved about?

Does anyone have chickens from Greenfires first line of Legbars? I got my chicks from a guy that has some as his breeders. I am finding info online saying Greenfire mixed Legbars with Rhodebars and they are more colorful than they should be. I have 2- 3 month old roosters and they look nothing like the pictures of Legbar roosters on the internet. I posted pictures on the Legbar thread and they say they are crossed or the guy sold me something else. This guy has always been great and fair. I don't think he crossed them or gave me the wrong chicks. I was wondering if anyone else has had odd colored chicks from this line. I normally ignore this type of information online but the chicks look like they could be crossed with Rhodebar or Welsummer but the guy I bought them from doesn't have these breeds. I have been to his place a few times. His breeds are all seperate and they are all beautiful. My hens are all fine. I know this is the hatching place but you guys aren't mean when I ask a question like the other threads. These are my 2 roosters.
