November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

Hello. :)

I live in Thailand.....can I join this hatch-a-long too?

My broody hatched 3 out of 3 eggs only 10 weeks ago and much to my surprise (and delight!) she is now broody again and sitting on 10 eggs this time. I also have 12 eggs in my bator. A 2nd broody hatched 6 chicks a week ago...so we have lots of babies at the moment, with more on the way. I'd say I'm definately addicted LOL :D

Absolutely welcome! When did your broody start this time? I just want to put your expected hatch date on page 1 table

Clara started brooding her current batch on 13 October, so due around 3rd November. I put 12 eggs in the bator at exactly the same time.

She's a tiny girl (I think a red sex-link) and I've noticed that this time around she is much more aggressive/vocal about her eggs. With her previous clutch she got off to stretch her legs quite a bit, this time around I never see her off the eggs (but the kids sometimes do, so I guess she's probably eating/drinking ok).

I will be starting my second incubation adventure tomorrow so I'm going to join your hatch-a-long. It looks like fun! I definitely have an addiction haha. My last hatch I only got 2 silkie chicks out of 26 eggs. I had built my own incubator and just found out that my temp/humidity gauge was off by quite a bit so I'm lucky I had any hatch at all. I was so disappointed because I babied the incubator and those eggs constantly. So I got myself 2 bators from the local feed store (one for incubating and one for lockdown). My entire hatch will be shipped eggs and staggered. Tomorrow I will set 15 coturnix quail eggs. They're resting right now. I have easter eggers due to arrive Monday from mypetchicken, and silkie eggs to arrive anytime between Tuesday and Friday. I have batches coming from 3 different sellers on the silkies. I'm working on my silkie flock

Good luck!! I know just what you mean about the disappointment. My first attempt I had 24 at set, 17 viable at lockdown and ended up with 1 hatcher that survived. And I too am an egg babier. To the point I'm up at least three times in the middle of the night to check on temp and humidity, but found out after that my thermometer was 6 degrees off. Just started our 2nd attempt a couple days ago.

That sounds so much like the fiasco I had lol. Except I only had 9 make it to lockdown. I had 3 internal pips but only 2 of those hatched. One has deformed feet but is a little trooper and is overcoming it great.

My temp was off 5 degrees and the humidity registered half of what it actually was

Hopefully we both have better luck this time! Good luck!!

My last batch was by a broody and I watched her like a hawk. Luckily I noticed just in time that she had crushed two eggs right around hatching time. I quickly put them in the incubator. They did have their beaks totally out of their shells so I could see them breathing (and cheeping), but both their shells were totally crushed. I had even caught the broody pecking at one and there was a lot of blood, including all over her beak! Over the course of around 12 hours I gently and carefully picked away some of their shells to help them hatch after it became apparent they were not going to do this on their own. I promptly named them Faith and Hope and gave them back to the broody. Now, just over a week later, I can't even tell them apart from the other chicks. :)

Thanks

They try to come out and eat and drink when no one is watching.

Well we set our eggs tonight, there are 32 total. Eggs came from my sister who raises eggs. They are a barnyard mix, I couldn't tell you what breeds. She has a little of everything I think. This is my second attempt at incubating. Wasn't sure if we'd try again since my first yielded one survivor due to an off thermometer, but I got the chicken bug and our sole survivor needs some company. So hopefully on or around the 6th we'll see some action.

The barnyard mixes are often the cutest. It is like Christmas time when they grow up since everyone of them is a surprise. We hatched this girl (and the Turken) in July. I have no idea what color egg she will lay.

It looks like chicken math has affected me! I have a young rooster and plan to sell fertile eggs in the spring. I figured I should "prove" his worthiness first. After not having another hen go broody, I bought an incubator (Hovabator 2362) and set 35 eggs yesterday. They should start hatching on November 7/8 which coincides with my vacation at work, so it is perfect.
My rooster is a Lebgar/Ameraucana cross, plus I have a small flock of crested cream legbars. I have not checked the legbar, marans, or australorp eggs for fertility, so I don't have much hope of them hatching. Everything else is fertile. Assuming a 70% hatch rate on the fertile eggs, I'm hoping for 14 or so chicks. If the legbars and marans eggs hatch I'll be delighted. I'd love to have some olive egger chicks!

Fertile eggs:
8 Easter Eggers
5 Rhodebar
6 Amberlink

Questionable eggs:
8 CCL
4 Black Copper Marans
4 Australorp
