November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

The barnyard mixes are often the cutest. It is like Christmas time when they grow up since everyone of them is a surprise. We hatched this girl (and the Turken) in July. I have no idea what color egg she will lay.

I know. My little lone survivor from the first hatch attempt, in my opinion, has been the cutest little thing. She's a month now and no one really knows what she's got in her. To me she looks like a little eagle with her head still a good amount fluffed...lol My sister has turkens too, so we do have a chance of ending up with one of them.

So, my two year old just went in and broke my remaining two eggs. :'( Sadly, count me out. I'm just going to try and break this broody, and try again next year.

I'm so sorry!

I just (obsessively) checked on tracking numbers. I may possibly be getting 3 of my eggs orders tomorrow in the mail. Hoping so because I'm so excited

It looks like chicken math has affected me! I have a young rooster and plan to sell fertile eggs in the spring. I figured I should "prove" his worthiness first. After not having another hen go broody, I bought an incubator (Hovabator 2362) and set 35 eggs yesterday. They should start hatching on November 7/8 which coincides with my vacation at work, so it is perfect.
My rooster is a Lebgar/Ameraucana cross, plus I have a small flock of crested cream legbars. I have not checked the legbar, marans, or australorp eggs for fertility, so I don't have much hope of them hatching. Everything else is fertile. Assuming a 70% hatch rate on the fertile eggs, I'm hoping for 14 or so chicks. If the legbars and marans eggs hatch I'll be delighted. I'd love to have some olive egger chicks!

Fertile eggs:
8 Easter Eggers
5 Rhodebar
6 Amberlink

Questionable eggs:
8 CCL
4 Black Copper Marans
4 Australorp
Welcome to the Hatch-A-Long. I am excited that your joined so that I can see all your CCL crosses when they hatch. Hopefully you will post pics.

I had 11 eggs to begin with all crosses of my CCL cockerel. Today was my first candling: 1 had been eaten by my broody already. I don't know if got crushed or if she sensed it was not fertile.

Out of the remaining 10- 2 of the 5 Red Star crosses did not develop and 1 had a blood ring. I noticed the ones that did not develop were the freshest eggs. For the past 3 weeks my cockerel is locked in the garage till noon because of neighbors complaints so that makes sense.
1 of the 3 RIR cross did not develp either. Again that was the freshest egg.
The only Australorp egg did not develop either. That also makes sense because she never let him near her.
The only CCL eggs is developing but since its a tiny pullet egg (1.6 oz) I am not so hopeful it will survive.
So bottom line I am down to 6 eggs.

What are your arrangements for brooding them. I am assuming it also gets pretty cold where you are! Or is it not that bad?

I will be starting my second incubation adventure tomorrow so I'm going to join your hatch-a-long. It looks like fun! I definitely have an addiction haha. My last hatch I only got 2 silkie chicks out of 26 eggs. I had built my own incubator and just found out that my temp/humidity gauge was off by quite a bit so I'm lucky I had any hatch at all. I was so disappointed because I babied the incubator and those eggs constantly. So I got myself 2 bators from the local feed store (one for incubating and one for lockdown). My entire hatch will be shipped eggs and staggered. Tomorrow I will set 15 coturnix quail eggs. They're resting right now. I have easter eggers due to arrive Monday from mypetchicken, and silkie eggs to arrive anytime between Tuesday and Friday. I have batches coming from 3 different sellers on the silkies. I'm working on my silkie flock

Let us know your final number when you set, so I can update the first page with your numbers

I think I am getting a dozen Ancona duck eggs tomorrow! Their hatch date will be around the 17th. I will have to come up with an outdoor brooder. I wish I had a broody, but no such luck! I put out a bunch of plastic eggs but had no takers. I have 8 ducks now, but probably half drakes... I am hoping to get a few more girls!!

What color Silkies? I have a few in the incubator... I am hoping for lavender or black or showgirl!!

I'm hoping to hatch at least one of every color. I have a variety coming with a possibility of all the colors. But if I'm missing a few colors it just gives me another reason to fill my incubators again lol at the very least I hope I hatch a lavender, paint, and splash! I got a partridge and white (or buff?) out of my last batch. fingers crossed for a diverse variety to add to my future silkie flock!
