November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I'm hoping to hatch at least one of every color. I have a variety coming with a possibility of all the colors. But if I'm missing a few colors it just gives me another reason to fill my incubators again lol at the very least I hope I hatch a lavender, paint, and splash! I got a partridge and white (or buff?) out of my last batch. fingers crossed for a diverse variety to add to my future silkie flock!
Cool, I can't wait to see what you hatch! I am so excited about silkies, I can hardly stand it!

Yesterday I discovered that one side of my incubator is a lot cooler than the rest of it. There are 3 different thermometers in the incubator (because I'm crazy like that). When I was testing it, they all read 100 degrees. Now with eggs in it, one side was at 102 and the other side was at 98/99. I turned it down a little and will be moving eggs every few days so they all get the equal amount of heat.

On day 10 I plan to candle and will toss any that aren't developing (I expect quite a few since I don't even know if the legbar or marans eggs were ever fertilized). Then all the remaining eggs can go in the center of the incubator where the temp should be more consistent.

I'm learning so much! I'm glad his thread is here. :)

You did the right thing. Lower temp is better than higher. Your incubation period may be prolonged by a day or two though because of it so don't panic if there is no hatch on Day 21.

I would like to join! I have eggs that should hatch around Nov 4th - I'm not sure if she started setting Oct 13 or 14. This is my story: Last spring I had a hen set on a nest of 17 eggs way back under my porch where I couldn't reach her. She hatched 4 eggs then abandoned the nest. Two days later one of my grandsons crawled under the porch and got the remaining 13 eggs. We opened the eggs and all but 2 looked like they would have hatched had she not abandoned the nest. Now the same hen is sitting under the porch again, so have no clue how many eggs she's setting on this time. I would like to take some of her eggs (if grandson is willing to crawl under there and reach under her to get them!) and see if one of my other hens would set on them. However, I have to figure out a way to get them from point A to point B without endangering the temperature of the eggs. If we would snatch a few eggs during the day, put them in an incubator, then that evening sneak them under a hen (who seems to always roost in a nest instead of on the roosting bars) while she's sleeping, do you think the eggs will be OK? I'm open to any suggestions.

I think if you do have an incubator, you should use that as a hatcher when she decides to abandon the nest. The other hen may be unreliable. Once they hatch in the incubator, you can put them back under the broody with the rest of the chicks. Thats the best course of events. Just in case she does not accept them, then you risk having to raise them on your own. Most broodies will accept the incubated chicks as long as its within the first 2-3 days of them hatching. The other option is that as soon as she starts hatching chicks, start taking them away and put in a brooder, till she is done with the hatch and give them back to her once she is done. That way she won't be able to discriminate between the chicks.

Hi everyone!! I'm joining with 13 Crested cream legbar eggs in on the 18th, due the 8th!! So excited but its going to be hard to go from a fresh non shipped hatch to now a shipped hatch but hoping they will be good. This will make my fourth hatch

I set my broody Australorp KoKo with 11 eggs yesterday so set to hatch November 2nd. Everyone welcome to join.
6 eggs are Crested Cream Legbar (CCL) x Red Star (my Red Star Marcy is a prolific layer 362/365 days in her first year). Hoping for some Olive eggers from F1 generation.
3 eggs are CCL x RIR
1 CCL x Australorp (I never saw them mate and only had 1 egg so more than likely infertile)
1 CCL x CCL . Its a pullet egg only 1.6 oz so not much hope from HOPE's egg.

Wishing myself and everyone who is setting their eggs now all the luck.

P.S. I am in Chicago so it will be interesting to see how the chicks fare in the cold with their mama.

I absolutely love this chart, thanks for taking the time to put it all together. Could I suggest something maybe for next time?? A category for lockdown? Or is that too much going back for you? I was just thinking it would be nice to compare everyone's hatch rate based on the lockdown not just the setting to exclude infertile/bum eggs? Just a thought. Thanks again!!!

I just looked up crested cream legbars.... so PRETTY! I guess I have another breed to add to my wish list LOL Good luck on your hatch! I'm on my second hatch but it's staggered... does that count as all the same hatch?

All of mine are shipped eggs so I'm looking forward to hearing about your progress. I've read so many different reviews on shipped eggs that I'm always interested to hear more

I'm in the same boat about silkies!!! I found free silkie hatching eggs last time and my silkie chicks are soooooo sweet and cuddly! I've fallen totally in love with them and decided I must have a silkie flock full of all the pretty colors... and it feeds my incubation addiction so that's a good reason too right?

Let us know your final number when you set, so I can update the first page with your numbers

15 quail set 10/19 and set to hatch 11/4. 20 chicken eggs are being set tomorrow morning (10/21) so hatch date about 11/10. I have 2 more batches coming and will update when I set them
