November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I'm not sure what to do or if I should do anything. I don't know how long it has been since this one pipped. the membrane looks dry and brown and there is no movement or sound coming from inside. I don't think it made it.

Sorry madicakes. :( If you can't see any breathing then it is probably gone. I have one that looks the same way. Another chick knocked the egg over and I don't think it was able to zip. You can try peeling back a bit of the shell to see if you get any movement. Be careful not to take too much since there will be blood vessels right under the membrane.

The 16 chicks that have hatched so far. There are still four in the incubator that I don't think will make it. They all pipped but that was it. I should have taken the other chicks out of the incubator sooner. They were hopping all over and the remaining eggs were rolling around all over the place. I don't think the other chicks had much of a chance to zip. One of them seems pretty strong but I think the others have given up. I'm letting them rest now and will revist them in an hour. I wish I could turn off the fan in the incubator since I think it is just drying them out. :( Happy to have my 16 energetic chicks though!
Yea! Nice looking mix.

So sorry, sometimes they just don't make it.

Goodness! I never knew how hard it would be to deal with chicks that don't hatch according to plan. My four "late chicks" are still in the incubator and I feared they were dried out. Using shop towels (the paper towel kind, not the reusable kind) I built two little tents over the eggs and sprayed them down with water. The humidity in the incubator is around 80% and the fan is not blowing directly on them anymore. It looks like two of the babies are starting to come out of the shells. I'm going to go find something to keep my hands busy and check on them in another hour. Fingers crossed they can make it out alright.

Your 16 chicks are adorable!

Why can't you turn off the fan in the incubator? If there's no physical way to turn just it off, you could drape wet washcloths over it. It would work twofold: Block air, and air that does get through is more humid. If like me the problem is uneven temps, you're down to four eggs. Could you place them all in an idea location to get just the right amount of heat?

You're telling me, all but one of my chicks are late. :p

Sounds like they're making good progress, what a great idea! Now I'm going to have to go steal some straws from my mother in law and make little wet fabric tents for my remaining eggs. Gosh why didn't I think of that. Good luck!
Say hello to my first hatching. Also the very first chick ever hatched from my own flock.

Grats Kaylish, It's so special when they're your own. :)

Wow! I'm gone for a day and things blow up in here!!! Congrats on all the chicks!

I've been struggle with my loan Hatcher from my barnyard mutt eggs. It is three days old and just now starting to look fluffy. One foot has managed to correct itself..but the other is still folded over some. Tried chicken slippers and that just made it stressed and fall over and so I took them off. Finally starting to eat some. I have put the two older chicks I bought in with it and they are all getting along ok..not great but ok. Hopefully it will continue to get stronger
At east now it keeps one of his eyes open...the other he keeps closed . Can open it and looks normal, but just walk around and pecks around half blindly... sigh....

In other news the shipped eggs seem to be doing ok for now. Hard to tell for sure numbers because of the Marian eggs, but 10-15 eggs are developing on schedule.

Sorry for not responding to everyone...on my tablet and it makes it difficult to quote/type.

Again...yay for the hatchlings!

Have hope for the little one! I decided to try the pipe cleaner boot overnight with my struggling chick - he has a bad eye from the egg cementing to him -right to his eyelid- and wasn't using his toes, just tripping over them. I made the boot and he hobbled and almost gave up. I finally got it on well right before bed. Next morning, I took it off him and his toes looked better! Because of the bad eye, I hand watered him and worked on feeding him slowly - his aim was off. He figured out eating by end of day 2. On day 3, I finally figured out how to teach him about the water. Now, he is the smallest from not having as much food and water the first two days, but he can walk fine and is back on track. He hatched last week, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind.

Try the boot overnight first, see if that's the boost needed.
