November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

This will be my first one, a little extra planning to try and have them hatch as close to Easter as I can. I would actually like them to hatch the day before so I wont be too busy to make dinner by staring in a lighted box the whole time.

I bought my bf a light for his bike its 750 lumens. I can candle at 3 days and see the start of the baby perfectly. I need to control myself.

I have a lot going on in the bator. Down to 27 out of 36 white leghorn, 29 out of 2 dozen buff orps and 1 dozen barred rock. 12 out of 15 random pure breeds, polish, silkies, Dominique. 18 Maran, 12 ameraucana, 30 button quail, that's about it. Oh and 3 Rouen eggs. All the eggs were shipped minus the random 15 and 6 dozen Leghorn/ barred rock/ buff orps. I split those with someone I don't get to keep them all.

Awesome!

Holy cow and I thought I had incubation craziness going on LOL love it! I'm trying ducks for the first time too and am really excited about it

easter hatch! I've never done an Easter hatch. My daughter would poop her pants with excitement if I hatched out ducks for easter. She's 11 BTW.
My oldest is 10 and would probably do the same :) I'm going to have to give this Easter hatch thing some serious thought

Excellent point! Glad you pointed that out cuz I'm not sure it would've occurred to me soon enough to attempt to prevent it

Congrats on the new babies, everyone! Mine aren't due til the 22nd. Seeing yall's babies is making this wait so much more exciting!

My ducklings are due the 22nd :)

What do you guys do with the last to hatch when the stronger chicks keep picking on him?

I was worried about that at first as well. I found that by the end there were so many already in the brooder that they couldn't remember who was new and who was not. The third one got it worst. After that they lost count. I am sure there was some bullying of the newer chicks I didn't notice, but nothing that did any damage.

When I first started with chickens a lady was kind enough to remind me that they're not always nice creatures. We got the term "pecking order" for a reason.

Pecking and bullying is just the way of chickens. They'll sort themselves out.

Unless they're late hatchers, like some chicks I know... -_-

Just saying... you should plan for that or you'll wind up with an entire weeks worth of ruined schedules because your chicks can't fit a calendar in their shells.

Sometimes I put a wash cloth in like a little wall to give the weaker chick(s) a chance to rest without torture. By the time the chicks figure out how to get over the wall the newer chicks are stronger. You could use a strip of cardboard too. I just make it so that there is access to water and food on each side.

My hatch(es) are (finally) finished.
My first hatch went into lockdown with 5 eggs and 2 of them hatched. My second hatch went into lockdown with 11 eggs and 7 of them hatched.
All told, I got four girls, three boys and two mystery chicks from my GLW, but I think they're also girls. I'll get some photos when I am not so wiped out.

I can't wait to see how the remainder of the group does!

Yay!

I'm pretty sure I have 3 girls and 2 boys. Since they all look so much alike I marked the boys heads with blue markers, LOL.

Too funny!

It's been a rough week, and I had my first serious egg-cident! I dropped another egg onto this one while candling! I'm concerned for the other egg's air cell, the shell looks fine. But, this one had a dent! I have a huge block of cheese wax... It kinda glopped drips onto the egg. If the chick makes it, I'll thin the wax before lockdown so that it'll be easier to pip and zip through.

Great news, though: my three CL eggs have veining! Yay!

2 little bantam Australorps have arrived from under my broodies! Think one is blue and one is black. Another has pipped, and 4 left to start. Excited!!!
