November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

And here's the brooder box we made to fit into the corner of the bathroom:

Still watching everyone's adventures.

For the curious, I did have one silkie bantam who was a failure to thrive, who pulled through with a bit of care - mostly warm food, vitamins, and holding it up to drink. He or she (might be a he? It has some serious top-knot going on!) is energetic now and fights for food and the best perch - but is half the size of the other silkie bantams:

And when compared to the non-bantam breeds looks even tinier:

I'm very curious about the teeny one now, because it's a different colour to the others - we have one very 'partridge' looking one, and two white and yellow ones, but this one is a sort of gold all over.

So far we haven't lost any, and today we built a larger brooder for them than the cardboard box they're in, which I can post photos of once it's dry.
Sure is adorable! and the brooder box looks nice!

Ok, I just put my 13 on lock down! 12 eggs are from a local farm and 1 egg was from my pullet that I couldn't resist :) All eggs are alive and bouncing! Now to see how many will hatch and thrive. First time to see if I can get close to 100% hatch! As for my other 12 in the bator still growing, might drive my crazy. I had some hens and a rooster that I had got in a group and planned on keeping some and selling the others. Only a couple were laying, so I decided to mark the eggs and leave them to see if anyone wanted to lay on them. After about 5/6 days and didn't notice anyone tending to them, except a young americauna pullet that covered them, I decided to take them but couldn't get myself to just throw them out, so in the bator they went. And a couple more went the next 2 days

. Well I just candled and not sure how but I have a couple that seem much further along...lol I'm terrible at candleing except to say yes it alive or dead, and can see veins, but not good at telling what day its on! I guess I will make lock down from when I know the hen layed the egg insted of when I put it in the bator. And yes I'm really dumb and didn't candle before putting them in the bator to start....lol At least the eggs were free and no more are going in so it won't be tragic if they try to hatch in the first bator. Anyways, the next couple weeks will be fun and I keep on learning!! Good luck to all hatching and will update soon

Was planning to post on lock down day. That is today so here is my story. I use Hatchbatch the app that keeps track of handling dates and tells me development day by day. I also hand turn. I have 9 ducks and 22 white leghorn eggs. Every thing seems to be going great. I started out with 25 leghorns, 3 were not fertile and 10 ducks, 1 was not fertile. I decided to candle one last time before lockdown this morning. All are due to hatch between Friday and Saturday. I put the mini mag to the first duck egg and it had already pipped thru the inner membrane, as had all the ducks, when I went to candle the third... the shell was pipped. I'm excited, but concerned as well.I can here the duck chirping thru the shell. I think I may have an early duck. Has any one had this happen? Yes humidity and heat has been maintained

Can you get that app on Samsung galxies??

What do you all mean by lockdown...is that when you begin counting the days?

I have an olive egger .....I put four eggs under her Sunday after she had set on a golf ball for a few days. This is day three. The eggs are mutt eggs from a neighbor. As far as I have seen she has not come off the nest at all. Her nest is in a dog crate. There is food and water in the crate and I started opening the door for her in the day time in case she wants to get out of the crate. People assure me she will not starve herself, but I wonder.....
