November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

The worst happened today. The wind knocked my power out while my chickens were mid-hatch. It looks like it was as low as 80 and as high as 103. I have no idea for how long.  I lost my Duccle I am 99% sure its dead in the egg. It had pipped at 6am. I opened up its hole a bit and its not moving when its beak is touched. I found another who had pipped at the wrong end, I helped it a bit and moistened it's membrane. Its still alive. I have 4 other eggs that I have no idea if they are alive.

I have the 4 that hatched before I went to work, I guess I was lucky they were probably already dry when the power went out.

I'm so sad. All the eggs were looking so good. We NEVER loose power. I think the last time was 5 years ago. I wish I had a broody hen - this wouldn't have happened.

I am lucky that my 4.5 week olds were already didn't need a heat lamp. They are all fine.

I'm going to go cry now. I hope the one I just helped a bit can make it.

:( I'm so sorry to hear that.

Had to take updated pics of my November hatchlings. They are 3 weeks tomorrow/Thursday. Can't believe how fast they are growing. Guessing on the sexes at this point I am guessing 5 hens to 7 roos...lol Of course they could all be roos for all I know. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part that I have 5 hens...lol Here's my November babies at a week and a half and now:

Been super busy with the U.S. holiday coming, I've just caught up! I am loving seeing these baby chicks! To the incubator failure and power failure go my sympathy! I'm in a new state, and I have no idea how often the power may go out here!

We're in lockdown, hatch day due tomorrow, and anxiously checking for that first pip! Eight eggs are in lockdown, I'm unsure about two of them. Of the original 20, we have 2 cream legbars, 3 Rhodebars, and 3 Marans still contending. More when I can get time online again!

Argh, it's hit or miss for me whether I can post pics. It's a miss today.

First egg hatched: Cream Legbar! Female!
Second egg pipped: Cream Legbar!

I'm feeling good about this hatch right now. of the 4 CL eggs I received, two have made it to this point. Before the first external pip this morning, I had candled again - the cracked she'll where the pip is coming through looks cool, btw. The Rhodebar eggs had movement. The Marans are too dark to see into during daylight, though. I'm hoping they hatch.
