November Hatch-A-Longs 2017

I'm trying out a new incubator and so far it's running cool. I think they need to double layer the plastic lid. It doesn't insulate enough. I having to cover the lid to keep the temp at 99.5 and it's turned up as high as I can get it. It does hold 56 eggs and turns every two hours. It hatched out three of my hen's chicks so far. The shipped eggs don't seem to be doing much as far as developing. Day 13, hoping they are still alive and just developing slow - since it took me a week to realize the thermometer wasn't calibrated - it was 2.6 degree off.
So the eggs were at 96.9, uhg!

I had put a thermometer in and it wasn't reading correctly, either. Got a good thermometer & humidity-verified calibration. I'm at 99.5, no warmer. Day 15, power surge tripped the surge protector this morning - glad I was home and was able to reset.

One lonely baby as of tonight, the end of day 20. It’s a little small. I know the orchard flock contains bantams, though its egg was full sized. I wonder if it’s another bantam/standard cross.

Three more pips and one trying to hatch.

Hope the others will follow suit. Mine waited almost a whole day after the first one. Good thing is that now the one-month old "lone" chick is getting along well with the new babies when they get to come out and run around in the house. I'm hoping to be able to put them all in the coop at the same time in a separate area from the older birds when the time comes.

Last time mine hatched from late day 19 to early day 22. Hello, inconsistent temperatures! These seem much more consistent. I think one more at least will be out tonight, but baby will have to be by herself for tonight. Thankfully she has the heating plate, so she’s a little happier under there than first hatchers in the past. Still very, very noisy. It breaks my heart, but I know she’ll have a friend in the morning and be just fine.

Four hatched overnight for a total of five so far. A teeny tiny bantam and (gasp) a naked neck. Oh, Lordy, lol. One chick is still wet and staying in the incubator. The other four are in the brooder. Four more pips, two from yesterday that look like they’ve made a little progress, two new ones.
