NOW CONFUSED!!!!!!!

When my hens go broody, they lay about 6 or so eggs, then start sitting, or is it setting, I dunno. But of course, my eggs never hatch because I do not have a rooster. One of my hens has hidden her eggs way under the barn where I can not reach. She comes out squawking and flapping every once in awhile to eat and drink and goes back. I use to worry about hens going broody and never getting up, but this one has done it several times in the past 1 1/2 years I've had her, so I no longer worry. I thought they'd sit till they died if the eggs didn't hatch, but they do give up after almost 3 months, and start all over. Takes about 21 days for eggs to hatch once they start sitting full time. Good luck with your hen going broody!!

my original hens were on the corn/scraps diet. They were "not laying right" when they were given to us. We put them on a full laying ration with scratch for a treat, free range and grit. They laid every day during the winter up til about two weeks ago.

of course, I do not know how old they are, I'm thinking at least 2-3 years since I had one die of seemingly old age. I think my other girls are getting up there, too. They still free range, and I keep layer available to them all times. Although the sneaks like to bust into the younger chick pens and eat chick feed!!!

My hen that lays light green eggs is 7 years old. She stops laying for about 4 months, after her fall molt in Oct and then starts laying agian in Feb. I do not get eggs from her every day anymore, but at least she is still laying! My friend had a hen live to be 15 years and still laid about a dozen eggs a year at that age.
