NOW CONFUSED!!!!!!!

It takes a rooster to lay fertile eggs. The crumbles make it easier for them to lay more eggs with better shells that do not break so easily. Years ago, I used to feed only scratch, as when I was growing up, that is what chickens were fed. Then about 10 or more years ago, the feed store people told me to feed them crumbles as it helps them lay. I found this to be very true. I give mainly crumbles, and some scratch. They also free range quite often.

ok i do have the crumbles and thats what i will give them from now on and i will get the oyster shell asap

Sorry you lost a hen. I lost a chick last week when a blue jay attacked and killed it. So, when your little cochin starts running around, make sure birds can not get into your pen. Of course, it will have a mama to protect it. Mine are chicks I got from the feed store. Does one of your hens go broody ever? Or are you going to hatch in an incubator? I do not have an incubator, nor do I have a rooster.

the lady i got her from said that she would go broody... i hope so bc i dont have a incubator or a brooder... so if not im outta luck
