I've learned that the black snakes visit just as the sun is setting.
I had a close encounter last weekend - was going to post it but didn't. Just before dark, I went to close the barn and saw something black under the straw. I said to the birds, please tell me that's a feather. Nope - it was a snake.
So I took a stick and poked around it so it would leave but no luck. Since it was down in a hole - a mouse hole - I thought it must be catching something.
I can't believe what I did, but I was determined that snake was going to be out of the barn before I closed it up for the night. I took ahold of its tail and started pulling - with my bare hands. I can tell you I had the creepiest feeling in the world when it kept coming and coming and coming. The thing had to have been about 6 feet long b/c I'm 5'3" and was holding it up over my head and it almost touched the ground. I then freaked and thought, what the h am I going to do now? So I threw it out into the pasture - didn't hurt it - and it was stunned for a second. I took the long stick and went to scare it away and the darned thing started after me and opened its mouth to hiss and it looked weird.
OMG - a tiny infant mouse fell out of the mouth. I almost threw up but was too busy scaring the snake. It took a few tries but it finally turned around and went into the field.
Then back into the barn I go and there is a much smaller black snake headed for three eggs. I got the eggs, the snake disappeared but had the infant mice for dinner instead b/c the hole was reopened (after I dropped the infant mouse back in - didn't know what else to do with the thing).
Well, that's my weird snake story. I respect them but don't what them in the barn even though I know they're there.
Ewww - now I'm all creepy again.
