Now I'm confused,

Minus 30 is nothing compared to the way it used to get some years back before i moved up here. Apparently it would get minus 40 or somtimes close to minus 50. Brrrr. Global warming has caused things to warm up more. Lots of people got chickens up here. Gotta have a good tough breed of chicken I think. People have the red sussex and rock hens up here.
 
We are not as far north as you are but, in mid-northern Ontario, -20C is not uncommon for a few weeks at a time. We have not wintered ours yet. Our neighbour has 18 and ended up insulating her coop slightly and running one heat lamp. She did not use a heated waterer and only bought cheap styrofoam insulation. Worked great for her. Now possibly with colder-longer temps a heated dish would be in order!!
