Now I'm nervous

No you don't have to have a rooster to have eggs. They won't be fertilized.

Have you looked under the breed section here for pics? There is another site called feathersite.com that has loads of chicken pics.

Welcome and good luck.

Thanks to all of you who replied, I picked yours, justusnak, to respond to because you covered all of my angst.

15 chickies arrive May 7 - I got three each of RIR, Barred Rock, SLW, Brahma and Araucuna (sp?). I'd love to also have Cuckoo Marans or Welsummers (comb issues in the cold, I know, but those mahogany eggs!!!).

The coop will be 10x10, so it's plenty big, it's the run I worry about, I've got hawks, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, fisher cats, you name it, all in the neighborhood, so keeping them safe when I'm away is going to be an issue. I'm planning on making the run larger than the coop, in other words, going out from the back on both sides and out so it's going to be about 20x20. I am planning on letting them out into the yard when I'm around.

We've got to build the brooder securely for in here, too, cuz we've got two kitties who are going to be beside themselves at the thought of birds in the house! They spend all their time at the windows watching the bird feeder, this is going to be interesting.....

Nothing got built today, because it's raining out, but he did buy the lumber, so we're off and running! Again, thanx all of you for your support, I'll need plenty of it as we go along!
