NPIP Certification Costs?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I have never asked something like this before. Anyway I am seriously considering becoming npip certified so that I can ship eggs and such. But my question is, how much would it cost to have 165 birds tested? Thanks!

Huh, you in the US? In Canada we don't have to be certified

Every state has different charges. Contact your State Veterinarian and that person should be able to provide you with all the information you need to get your birds tested and apply for NPIP certification.

That depends entirely on your state. It is a national program but administered by states.
Some states have a cost, some don't.
In Missouri, the basic test (pullorum-typhoid) is free, no matter how many birds you have.

Are you sure about that. It does appear that you have to be licensed according to the law and I would guess that does require some form of testing.

In addition to costs varying, the number of birds tested varies by state. Some states only require a percentage of birds be tested. Missouri requires every bird over 4 months of age on the property be tested.
Some states may also require other tests besides P-T.
In Missouri, you can also have them tested for AI, MS, MG and Salmonella for an additional cost but those aren't required for NPIP certification.
If you only test for P-T, you may be limited to which states you can ship to since there are states that require source flocks at least be AI clean for importation.

That's for commercial meat birds not breeding hatching eggs
But it is interesting. I guess all the breeders up here are doing it illegally

The NPIP program requires certification for transferring eggs and poultry across state lines. In actuality, in Missouri, NPIP certification is required to sell birds within state too. In that regard, lots of people do so illegally. Venture at your own risk.

For the OP, you'll need an appointment. They will come to your farm and do the blood test. You'll get immediate results and get a certification in the mail. Your flock will be tested the same month every year to continue certification.
You'll also get a booklet of VS Form 9-3 with carbons for the 4 colored copies. One accompanies the shipment, two copies are for your state agency and one is your copy.
In Missouri we have something called the Missouri Poultry Yearbook. It has every flock owner, breeder and hatchery that is NPIP certified in the state. It is quite a resource and available in hard copy and online.

At onr time a positive test for Salmonella resulted in the involuntary depopulation of your flock. This was required for egg sales. Ask questions first, not after the fact.

Good point. My birds will be blood tested later this month. I inquired about AI testing and my tester recommended that I not test for that. He said that if the test came back positive, they would retest later. But if the second test came back positive, they would de-populate every bird on the property.
He said that would be too high a price to pay for an irreplaceable flock that obviously had immunity just for the ability to ship to a handful of states.
The blood test doesn't show that the birds have AI, just that they were exposed.
