NPIP Certification for NC

I think I will do this this spring. It would be well worth the cost to become NPIP certified. I don't think they care at all about where the chickens are housed. I saw someone on CL one day selling NPIP certified chicks. The issue was that the coop and the area where they foraged was pure mud. I know I would never buy from a breeder like that but they were certified.

Greetings, for those having difficulty getting ahold of folks at NCDAG for the NPIP program, the phone # is 919-606-8107. The cost is still 50$ + 10 cents a bird for the Salmonella/pullorum. Avian influenza testing is free. They test for AI twice a year and Salmonela/PT once a year.

This might sound crazy, but getting NPIP and AI certified... does this affect your taxes, homeowners or anything like that? I mean does it make you a "farm" I guess is what I want to know.

Do certification allow anyone to come and inspect any time or just at inspection time?

I sent an email and got a response with a few hours. They had someone to the farm within a few weeks. We have a flock of 15. It took about an hour and a half (at most) to test all the chickens... And that included set up and clean up of the testing site. The tech that came out was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly! She was downright awesome! She handled my flock with care and even took time to cuddle the ones who were showing signs of stress there is nothing to help on the NC ag website. But if you contact the state vets, they will answer all your questions. The tech that is assigned to the area that I am in is amazing! OK, so I did feel a little like "the hot zone" when she got all geared up... But they take great bio security measures and are very professional. I did my research before deciding to have my flock NPIP certified. I'm glad that I can say I did. If I can be of any other assistance please let me know. I hope I was helpful

Quick update for 2021 since info is still hard to find and the links on the NCAGR website for NPIP are (still) broken. NC residents need to email [email protected] and he will coordinate with the field team. They will call you to set up a day and time to come out and do the testing.

They require the following information:

• Your physical/911 address
• Your mailing address (if different)
• Your telephone number
• An approximate number of adult birds on your premises (poultry, waterfowl and upland gamebird)
  
  They are running behind right now, our tester is the coordinator for the eastern region of the state and he said they have VERY limited staffing right now because of COVID and Mark (above) is the only one in the office. From when I first reached out to getting our certification (today, woohoo!) was a little over a month. He said it could take up to two weeks for us to get our flock number because, again, only one person is in the office to accept the paperwork for new flocks. The testing itself was quick and easy. Grab a bird, give it to him, put the bird back, go get another bird, so on and so forth. It took a little over an hour to do our flock of 30 chickens and ducks, setup and breakdown of the testing station included. It's still $50 + .10/bird for the initial testing, then $10 + .10/bird annually for renewals. AI testing is free and is done twice a year (30 birds or your whole flock, whichever is less), they call you every 6 months to set up an appointment to come do swabs.

OK, so i thought that she would inspect the run and the coop- NO! she looked over The Girlies (what we call our flock) but that was out of her enjoyment of chickens. seriously, they come to test your flock for the diseases and that's it. i'm glad we did NPIP and it was an easy process and thoroughly explained by the state vet (i asked a ton of questions). it is something you do need to renew every year, and if you get new poultry, they must come from an NPIP flock or hatchery (most are).

Can I ask how Much it Cost you to get them tested ? I'm also having a hell of a time trying to research it online for NC

Costing me $50 and .10¢ a bird so around 70$ for me
