I think that is a great idea! I bought my chicks at 4 and 5 weeks old last spring and it was great because, for us beginners, they weren't as fragile as the tiny ones are. I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't want to have to deal with heat lamps and brooders, but want young birds. And you're so sweet to let her keep one of her babies.

I've seen them all. I have one very light silvery blue Orpington and one silvery blue EE baby who is identical except for the white spot on its head. Two of the Barred EEs are black, as I expected with small white spots on their heads and one of them is very unexpected---it is black, but has gold all on its face! One of my two blue Ameraucana girls has produced an unusual child!
The Orpington is not in the following pics, but it looks identical to the little blue EE baby. First, the unusual baby with the gold around its eyes:

Hanging, I read about your broody killing the babies. I'm so sorry. You just never know what a first-time mom will do. So far, all my broodies have been fabulous and I know I'm very fortunate.

congrats speckled and nugget!!!
speckled, they r very cute! according to a chicken raising book i'm reading, that white spot means it's a rooster!

Actually, only a huge white spot on the BRs means its a cockerel. The ones with the small spots are girls. Even though they are crosses, I think the BR sexing rules still apply to a degree. What you are referring to is a black sexlink, where only the males have the white spot.

She is actually quite calm about us reaching in there to do things. She looks like she wants to peck my DH's hand when he tries to go under her to check the babies, then he pets her and talks to her and she raises up to let him. I think she'll be an exemplary mother.
