Good mama, Miss Nugget. She looks good and the chick in the picture is a cutie pie!

Can't wait to see the others. Thing about the broodies... you can't see as much but they do know how to take care of the babies, eh?

As soon as it warms outside and the fog burns off, we'll go out and check on Nugget and her babies. I'm very excited to see that silvery blue EE baby that I expected to come out black!
The next few days will be close up in the 70's and sunny so it will be good for Nugget to take the babies out, just as soon as the ground dries a bit from yesterday's rain.

oh that is so exciting! Can't wait to see them! Couldn't you let her have the chicks for 5 weeks or so and then sell them? I bet people would still want them at that age.

You know, daisy, I think I will let her keep them awhile. I have some in the bator that are on Day 13 today and I can at least let her experience motherhood till then. Even at the point I sell them, I believe I'll let her keep at least one to raise all the way. I hate taking babies from a hen who has been so devoted to them and sacrificed 3 weeks of her life and comfort.

Speck, why can't you allow the girls to raise the chicks up to their teen years when momma wants to get rid of them. Then you could get a bit more money for them and you wont have to watch the heart break.

I can't even begin to tell you how jealous I am! My mother hen Izzy ATE her chicks as they hatched

I happened to be out there and heard one peep still inside the egg. The hen went mad at it and began pecking at it and tried eating it too. I grabbed it from her and it's nice and toasty in the incubator. I was SO looking forward to having a good mother hen but I guess I will have to wait until Miss Prissy's grand orp grows up to get to see that. Or maybe my silkies.
