If it's raining, I wonder if there is something you can put in the run that will seep through the dirt to help sanitize that? I'm just thinking. Cuz rain would carry it well.
I checked with my extention office about MD. Ideal and other hatcheries say they don't recommend MD vac. for backyard flocks. My extention office said it's a wide spread problem and only bring in chicks that are vaccinated. So all the chicks I buy to sell get it. I do worry, because I don't know if my girls were vaccinated (my guess is no) and my hatchlings won't be. I know you can buy the vaccination. I might look into that.
So very sorry for your loss and continuing concern. I hope it all turns out for the best.
Carri - I just want to say, no matter what the conclusion is, I hope it all works out for you and the chickens. I'm hoping to hear some good news about this. Could there be a little space for some good news?
Oh I am so sorry to hear this! I hope your vet can recommend where you can get the vaccine locally. Noone here carries it (and I have been looking since Farmer has become paralysed-and I am paranoid). If you can't get it locally The Poultry Site carries it but you also have to buy a special shipping container for it.
Carrie, I'm so sorry for you.
It's bad enough losing one to anything, but it's even worse when you have to worry about the ones you still have.
I really hope you can get some good news from somebody concerning this matter.
Have you thought about calling your unniversity's poultry division (if they have one)? They might be able to offer some really good advice.
If you don't have one at your college and you don't mind the long distance call http://www.uaex.edu/depts/poultry/default.htm
Call Dustan Clark
Carri, I add my thoughts to everyone here in wishing you well on all of this! Poor Nugget and poor you. I will be watching the board for your posts (what an awful way to have to start a new job too!) All of your friends on the board are here for support and love. You were so sweet to send me a PM about my Wilma, and now I send you my concern and sympathy as well. (((HUG)))
It sounds like there isn't much you can do but wait and see how the rest will do. Cleaning probably won't do much at this point, because they have already been exposed. My guess is that most of them will be ok, but that means they are carriers and you will need to be cautious about any new birds you introduce. From what I read, it seems like the survivors will be more resistant to Marek's and so will their offspring, which seems like a silver lining to all of this.
Sorry for your loss and I do hope that you won't lose any more.

LoneCowboy, this is something you need to check into. The vaccine results in carriers of Mereks-they can pass the disease to your unvaccinated flock. I have unvaccinated birds, so I will never buy vaccinated ones.
Mereks is said to affect mostly young birds. Somehow as the bird ages it developes a resistance to it. If you other birds are around the same age as this one, you will probably be ok. To my knowledge, there are no vaccines other than for day-olds, basically b/c birds that make it to adulthood will have their own immune system working for them.
That's not to say that adult birds never get it, but your mortality rate *should* be very low with it. You will basically be breeding for Mereks resistant birds if you continue with an infected flock.
Oh, dear. You're lucky you have a vet that can help you. You probably already know you can get vaccines through firststatevetsupply. When our chickens went through the double wammy of ILT and Avian TB, I had some doubts about some of the diagnoseses that they did during the necropsy. But the State vets here were very good and answered a lot of questions. We were under quarantine, so they had to. But, a few times I got the distinct impression that I knew more answers they did. fyi I also called the vaccine manufacturer; they got their vet on the phone for me and she answered the billion questions I had about the vaccine, and the diseases. They were very sympathetic and a wealth of information. Carrie, I'm so sorry for you; I know how you must be feeling...but, just remember this...chickens can be very resilient and resistent, and our flock sure demonstrated that to us. I was so afraid we would lose them all, but we actually only lost a few..four or five, as I remember, to both diseases. Though that was painful enough, it could've been a lot worse. We prayed a lot and I think our prayers were answered.
