Number 2 Dog Dead

We have two loose dogs right now in the neighborhood that we've not been able to nab. Looks like black lab/pit or mastiff crosses, unneutered, of course. They have tags and collars, but darn if I'm gonna get close enough to check their ID. I saw them when they were molesting our neighbor's unspayed Doxie about an hour ago (hope she wasn't in heat) and the poor thing is traumatized to hell.

We drove around for 20 minutes but couldn't find them, likely a guest brought them over for the holidays, we don't recognize them as belonging to our neighborhood and as block captains of the Neighborhood Watch - we like to think we would.

The chickens went in early tonight, as did the ducks. I'm really tired of this crap. People are so fricking irresponsible these days and I'm so tired of cleaning up these messes.

Very sorry about your feathered ladies. You make your hubby a delicious desert tonight and tell him you're all in our thoughts.

You shouldn't feel bad - you did the right thing. I have dogs and I have Chickens and we are on Farmland so plenty of livestock about. I can tell you if one of my dogs got out, and went into a field and started hounding the livestock. I wouldn't be mad at the farmer if he shot my dog! I would be more mad because I let the darn thing out. It is the owners responsibility to make sure a dog is secured around livestock. I would not hesitate to shoot a dog if it were after my chickens!

Oesdog - good for you!!!

So many people that own dogs, don't deserve a dog. You did what you had to...not pleasant. Wouldn't you just love to be able to give the owners a sting of the lead for a change??

I know I would, it's their fault anyway. One of these days...

you did what you had too

a few months ago an chihuahua mix killed two of my roosters. he was not neutered, no collar, mix breed, so, naturally, we called the pound. turns out they tracked down the owner, a visiting friend of the neighbors across the street. we went on about how his dog had lost it's collar before he left to visit my neighbors, and how he didn't have 'time' to replace it and oh his dog's just adventurous and likes to wonder so he just lets him an he didn't neuter him because it wouldn't effect HIM if his dog sired a litter...

i totally blame the owner, not the dog

maybe we should call the pound on irresponsible dog owners instead of thier dogs

Yours might not have been the only livestock threatened. And, as someone else earlier stated so well, the next step up in the prey ladder might have been someone's small child. You probably saved a child's life by killing that beast.

I figured the buzzards are getting hungry around here. Hard to believe nobody claimed the dog from the side of the road where I left it. Some people should never own a pet, and nobody should be breeding aggressive breeds except the military.

I am of the mind that it's never the animals' fault. That owner should never be allowed to own animals again. Their roaming free constitutes abuse - miscare (is that a word) that lead to the death of their dog. You know they will not show their faces, because they could be liable for damages to your flock - they will never pick up that poor dog.

This is why I am an animal person. I love this website because all the folks on here also seem to love their animals. I have a dog (a greyhound), and if she got to someone's flock and they had to deal with it, I would be mortified that my dog had gotten out and hurt someone else's animals. That will never happen because I am responsible. Mistakes do happen, tho, and I could not hold anyone at fault for protecting their creatures. I love my dog, so I am extra careful she doesn't get into trouble. That being said, I live in suburbia, and I'm the only flock (6 hens - lol) around :)
