Nutri Drench

Sadie is still eating pellets and drinking water and I am giving her 1.5 ml Nutri Drench mixed with a little cooked oatmeal daily. She loves it so I don't have to give her the Nutri Drench with a dropper. She is so weak today, stumbling around the cage and at times laying her head down, I am afraid she isn't going to make it to Monday to see the vet. Is there anything else I can give her for added nutrition?

Can you take some droppings in to the vet in the morning, or go ahead and start some Corid for possible cocidiosis. I usually feed some chopped egg for extra protein.

I will call in the morning to ask if he will test droppings without having seen her. I am taking her to a different vet Monday, one who will draw blood and send it out for testing. My usual vet said he checked for worms and cocci. no parasites and cocci 50/50. I didn't give her egg today because of the oatmeal, guess that was a mistake.

Just remembered the new vet has days away from the office for farm calls. If he isn't in I will start her on Corid. Thanks!

Corid will not hurt her, but is expensive, around $23. It just may save her though, if that is her problem. My regular vet will test droppings on chickens he does not see, but most vets are very nitpicky about refusing to do anything or prescribe meds on birds they don't see. Even my vet daughter out of state recently refused to sell me tapeworm medicine for my dog who has obvious tapes, because she was not allowed to by her boss. We were there visiting without the dog, LOL. I guess the threats of being sued are a risk for vets as well as physicians.
Corid dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid, or 1 1/ 2 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5 days.

I already had corid here so started her on it last night. The vet wasn't in the office today and they are closed tomorrow so will have to wait until Monday. At least it is an early appt. She is much weaker today but still eating, drinking and poping.

You can give a couple of drops of undiluted Corid liquid, or use 1 1/2 tsp of the powder in 10ml of water to make the same. If you think she is not drinking enough, give her 2 drops in the morning and 2 drops again in the evening to boost her. I hope she makes it.

I didn't know I could give her undiluted corid. She took a couple bites of chopped egg that I had mixed with nutri drench this morning then refused to eat any more which is alarming because she loves egg. So she got nutri drench with a dropper. I have been making one cup of water with corid and gave her 10 drops last night, at that point she would bury her head under my arm so figured she was telling me - no more. I wanted to make sure she was drinking enough. I'm going to give her the undiluted corid now. I was surprised she was still alive this morning, she is so weak. She is still talking to us but it is very feeble.

Also, I moved her to our bedroom last night. Our cat started jumping on top of the cage and was scaring her. Tried shutting the door to the room Sadie was in but the cat scratched on the door and howled. Easier to move Sadie. I woke up over the night to a horrid smell. Sadie had pooped a liquid/semi liquid that smelled awful. Is that a sign of something? That has never happened before.

I first started using nutri drench a few years ago. It has been a life saver. I almost didn't get it though when I read ingredients. The first ingredient is propylene glycol. PG is cousin to polyethylene glycol ... You may know it as PEG or one brand name is Miralax ... Like PEG, propylene glycol can have a laxitve effect ... So I would use cautiously if loose stools are present. I might look for an alternative.
PEG and PG are also cousins to ethylene glycol ... The antifreeze that is pretty toxic. Both pg and peg are both much safer .... But do have the potential to be toxic to brain and kidneys with prolonged use or in higher doses .... so I use with caution with animals.

When she goes to the vet, I would ask about her possibly having internal laying or egg yolk peritonitis. Those can cause wasting, diarrhea, sluggishness, not wanting to walk, or walking oddly. There are so many diseases, and many have similar symptoms. If she doesn't make it, I recommend a necropsy by your state vet and poultry lab where they can run tests for her particular problem. Here is some info on getting a necropsy, a list of state vets, and some info about internal laying:
