I'm an author of "Bugging In: What To Do When TSHTF and You Live in Suburbia" as well as a few Thrillers and Apocalyptic Fiction books and ebooks. I'm into heirloom vegetable gardening and want to get some chickens. I'm not exactly new to raising chickens as we had chickens, ducks, and geese on our farm when I was a kid, but my knowledge is dated. Quite dated, as I'm retired.
I'm planning on getting a small flock (3-4) of Dominiques, as I've heard they do well in our hot summers, and have gentle dispositions. The gentle dispositions thing is important to me because my wife is a city girl and having gentle birds will ease her into this whole raising small livestock idea. I'm also considering Buff Orpingtons and Black Aracaunas for the same reason. The idea being to produce some of our own eggs and meat. I also wonder if a mixed flock is a better idea. I have a coop I got from Tractor Supply that looks adequate for four birds. I've placed it where it gets shade from a large Fir tree during the heat of the day.
Any comments on these breeds (or others) will be appreciated.
And if you like to read I'd like to invite you to visit my author website and check out my books and newsletter articles. This is not a plea for you to rush out and buy my books. It's just a way for me to introduce myself and let you know about them IF you're interested.

. As far as gentle breeds, nearly everyone on here will offer a different breed because it's their favorite and has been wonderful for them and then you have the other side who would never own that breed because it became a nightmare for them. Try out the ones you mentioned (I have some absolutely wonderful Ameracaunas and I have two that are mean, mean, mean when they go broody...go figure) but I have a bunch of different breeds and honestly I love them all. My favorites right now are Salmon Favorelles. They have a different sound then my other chickens and they just love being around me. When I go lock them up at night they all rush out of the coop and I sit down and they gather round me and on me and tell me about their day. They also remind me of little owls in their faces, lol. But you sound like the type of man who's gonna love his girls no matter what breed. Welcome to BYC, we're so glad you joined us at the family table for laughter, knowledge, sadness, cryin but mostly just sharin our love for chickens.....and ducks....and pea fowl....and turkeys....etc....
I'm familiar with the term TSHTF and very happy to be out of the swamp and living in the country.
