Sorry about Duckie - I saw him when you got him and thought he couldn't make it a week - so he had a full year of being pampered and fun and went fast - you did a good job of caring for him.

I had a tragedy at bedding down time. Duckie always sleeps with Big Girl the cx and tonight she was asleep on him. Sadly and very angrily I removed my buddy from the box they sleep in and buried him. The only non sad thing I can say is at least he passed happily with his best friend.

I feel your pain. I adopted a huge "rock" hen from my daughter because the other chickens were just tearing her apart. She lives happily with the bantam flock and has her own little house in the corner of the coop because she is too massive to get up on the roost. My beautiful little Lily, a bantam buff brahma, went broody in her little house and I discovered her flattened body one morning. Snowball was oblivious and I couldn't blame her, she is always so sweet with the bantams and their tiny chicks.

Years ago I had a dozen rouen adolescents who liked to sleep in a huddle in the cow pasture. I found all but one flattened like a pancake by my jersey who must have bedded down on the "warm spot" and crushed them all. I was devastated, but who would have imagined something like that would happen.

I'm so sorry about Duckie. We've had hens die and they were barely a blip on the radar, but others have left me broken hearted. How wonderful that he lived a good life while he was still here.
