So it seems Spitz the silver spitzhauben has gone broody again. Normally I enjoy a broody chicken, however there is a slight problem with this situation. Spitz is my 2nd in common roo. 3 days in a row he sat and I had to move him to the roost. Tonight he said nope I'm sitting on my eggs. So here is the question, do I actually see if he will stick to it or what?

Well that's something I've never heard of before. I guess you could try it? It would be really interesting to see if he would actually hatch eggs and then raise chicks.

He does raise them. He helped Girlie with the group from last fall.

Wow! I've had one rooster keep bigger chicks warm, but never had one go broody & hatch chicks! That'd be interesting to just experiment & see what happens. And when I had my broody Spitz hen last year at Chickenstock, she said Spitz aren't usually broody!
Speaking of which, 2 of my broodies (had 7, but most gave up due to going past 21 days w/o chicks hatching.) just adopted tonight the 46 incubator hatched chicks that were inside the brooder since Sunday. They had 1 chick hatch, so I moved them & then added like 8 between the 2 hens. They seemed ok, so I went back inside & got the rest! They huddled down & I had to move them off the chicks so they could eat/drink. Even though they all fit under the hens, it was squished under there, so I have a "mama heating pad" to help keep the extras warm. Hoping they are all ok in the morning. This first night is always the toughest! Lol

I would think he is sick ...when ever I have a chicken in the hen house ..that wont roost ...it is sick ..
If it is a real broody thing ? I would keep a back up ..

As of now he has been off the nest 1w times today
I would say you got a throw back ...He has reverted back to the original chicken ..
Other Birds Share the Nesting , Feeding , Raising of a brood
To Phrase Jurrasic Park " Life finds a Way "
Hatcheries have tried to breed broodiness out of chickens..yet Sometimes it still gets through ..
That is Pretty Cool
