NY chicken lover!!!!

Only eight eggs today? Really, girls? Really? Buncha slackers. *mutters about a showing of "Chicken Run" and making pot pies*

I closed off the spot where they had all decided to lay recently, so they aren't hiding them there. I may have to shovel out the bedding under the nest box shelves in case the duckehs are accidentally covering eggs laid down there when they're stomping all over the place in the coop.

I've also tossed the three eggs under my epic failure of a broody (I decided against opening them, as I suspect that the resulting stench would be of spectacular proportions). I'll be looking for a rabbit cage at TSC tomorrow so I can break her of this nonsense. No eggs for you!

Hope everyone has a great memorial day weekend.

Chicks came and were very bright and alert upon arrival. The dog stuck her nose in the box that they came in and I thought she was going to snuff all the bedding contents up her nose!

Off to work.

Stony--your girl did well and the babies are adorable.

Hen--glad to hear your hen is healing nicely.Hopefully it wont happen again. I find myself doing and saying the same thing when my egg count for the day is low.

My daughter and her fiance finally delivered my mothers day coop. They did well and with a couple of modifications it will be perfect for my new quad of silkies. I put all the tots in there yesterday and they seem happy. 4 of them go to their new home this weekend and so there will only be 4 in it. I have to put the wire on but thats fine.

The mini-yetis (as they were called) are doing well with mama. She wants to take them out but they are too little to do the ramp yet and I still dont trust Little Man not to kill them. I put her on the other side of the dividing fence so she could run out and get some air and stretch but her babies peeping brought her back in. I wont take down the fence until I am sure that Dad will be nice.

The terrorists in the new coop are eating me out of house and home. They better be cranking out those eggs come the fall to pay for all this!

Gonna be a hot one today. Off to work for another day of roasting.

/ugh. I've just decided after setting up my fans and waterers that after my two sets of pullets start laying, I'm rehoming all the heavy fat breeds to someone with an air conditioned coop

. My leghorns/NN/EE chickens do fine in both heat and cold, but I dread the heat when it comes to the brahmas and the other heavies. I have one rotund little black chicken (her name is puff) that I am betting heat will be very hard on. Haven't lost any yet in the heat, but...

Leghorns and NN do great in both cold and heat, no matter what anyone says. :p

What the ratchafratchingfratchetyfratch is with broodies and their eggs here suddenly? The one who WAS down to three eggs is now down to two, with absolutely no sign of the third egg this morning. All three were there last night. She's in a secluded spot without anything around her other than bedding (she's being flat out locked away today, as this is getting ridiculous - these are due Tuesday and I'd rather not lose an entire second hatch), and this is not a high-traffic area, yet this is the second time she has managed to "lose" an egg.

I just forked up all the bedding around her spot and found nothing, not even any broken pieces of shell. Either something is managing to get in there and steal eggs - unlikely, as no birds are ever harmed, there is no evidence of entry, and the resulting commotion would be audible from space - or I have an egg eater in the ranks. If I catch any of them in the act doing the latter, the culprit will be summarily processed, good layer or not.

Ye gods and little fishies, that's WAY too hot. I wonder how the cheeps would feel about frozen peas.
I tried peas last year, no one would eat them. I do have some frozen corn tho. They also didn't like frozen strawberries. If I had a smaller flock I'd just bring them inside for one day, but with 50ish chickens they just have to sink or swim. Thankfully I'll be home so I can put a sprinkler on and dole out the watermelon.

eta: I am hoping that's a typo on Wunderground.com - Albany has predicted heat index 95 and glens falls the same. Why would Gansevoort be 118? :) Keep your fingers crossed. LOL. I'm stocking up on watermelons either way.

It is looking like I'm going to have a chicken fatality soon. The little GLW has not been doing so good. And this is the one from show lines. it was getting pushed away at the feeder, but fixed that problem with the move to the bigger coop. Everyone else is coming in fat and happy from picking at the grass, this one is nothing but bones now. Was fine yesterday and when i set them out this morning other than being skinny. But this afternoon it has started doing a strange neck extension every 10 seconds with a little open mouth squeak. Eyes are closed often. Peeked in the coop before coming in tonight and everyone is up on the roost (or on the wall ledge ) except GLW with the tic.

Oh, I am sorry for you and the poor little chickie.. Have you any idea what's wrong with it? Is there a place to separate it out and give it a little extra vitamins, maybe a boiled egg? Doesn't sound good tho. =(
