NY chicken lover!!!!

I did, however, break 2 eggs in my pocket last night when I was attempting to catch the older chick to put it back in the coop. I was mad, mostly at myself, for doing so. Wont be doing that again any time soon!

I've done that. I have an egg collecting basket, but that sits in the kitchen on the counter with eggs in it half the time, because I'm too lazy to box them up. So, I end up carrying them in my pocket or in a pouch made of my shirt front or my hat or any other convenient thing, because it'd be too difficult to, y'know, get the basket designed to collect eggs.

guilty of the same. My egg basket sits on the counter right now with at least 3 dozen eggs in it from the last day or so. I really need to box them. Otherwise tomorrow I collect in my shirt

Also, Last Rooster Standing is just asking to join his brothers at Camp Crock-Pot. Now that he's the only roo, he's trying to challenge me for the top spot by staring at me and rushing at the fence when I'm on the other side of it. He sensibly backs down and gets away from me when I respond by stomping my foot, staring at him, growling, or stalking him, and stays well away when I'm on the same side of the fence as he is, but I'm half-expecting him to have a go at me sometime soon. Try it, buddy, and you're an entree. Rope, deck, utility and skinning knives - some disassembly required.

Afternoon all. Been busy finishing up all the wire on the silkie coop so the tots are nice and safe now. Finally got the hardware on the door and the chain on the pop door. The tots didnt seem to mind the noise much. Switched the tots and terrorists over to grower/finisher. They didnt like the organic feed I had to buy, probably because it was ground too fine for them. I will have to use it to make a mash or something.

Stripe and her babies are now fully integrated into the flock so no more separation in the coop. Her sister Sassy has taken over some of the mommy duties as well so everyone is happy. The weather is dreary and thats how I am feeling as well. All work and no play has left me very tired and cranky. At least my cheeps dont mind. Got more hatching eggs coming. Going to try this one more time...hopefully successfully this time!
Good luck!!!

I'd thought my big Buff Orp Mrs. Beasley's eggs were due Wednesday, as I hadn't marked it on the calendar. Nope - they were due today! I have new peeps!

She has a little light tan and white fuzzy butt and a darker tan fuzzy butt so far, with two eggs yet to go. She got Generic Light Brown eggs, making these who's-your-mama chicks. She objects to my looking at them, and she puffed up to the size of a volleyball and growled like a demon when she saw another hen, so she'll be a good mom. I have her blockaded into her nest box with poultry netting and tape (redneck ghetto barricade for the win!) at the moment to keep the psycho SS hen from trying a snatch and run with the little ones.

I almost feel sorry for my avatar hen. She is going back into broody mode because she hears the new peeps, and is sitting in a nest box clucking to her nonexistent babies. She was pretty well out of it, but she's on a roll again. Argh.

When my rooster starts getting aggressive< i make it a point to go after him first thing, pick him up and carry him while I do chores in his pen. it is not for very long, but daily. It really seems to help.

Hen, ..you are hilarious!

So its nice to know that I am not the only one who has done this with eggs. Thanks guys! So I have discovered my egg retrieval tool is also good for retrieving chicks from the run. Funny, they go down the ramp easily enough but wont go up it. Sassy has taken over momma duties to some extent and has become a pain in the butt. I have to force her out of the corner of the run every night now and the chicks are with her. Grrr. For such a little hen she has a big attitude.

I generally stare him down, then stalk him around until he avoids me. Alan goes for picking him up and toting him around a bit. He's not pulling anything if I'm within stalking or grabbing distance other than giving me the stinkeye - it's all through the fence at the moment. Stupid bird.

My newest mama appears to be holding at two chicks at the moment, but I'm not positive, as she is being a good, protective broody and objecting strenuously to my taking a look (and usually she's a lap chicken). She's also not a klutz like my BLRW, and isn't squashing the poor things (ugh). I'll set up the pen for them tomorrow and move them tomorrow night so she doesn't have to start booting tailfeathers yet. I'm certain she'll administer a beatdown to any bird senseless enough to go near them, though. Go, Mrs. Beasley, go!
