Hi All,
Haven't been on here in a while. Everyone was doing good up until about 20 minutes ago I went out to check on my chickens (They free range during the day) and one of my silkies wasn't looking too hot. Looks like he was in a boxing match. Was limping around on one leg, saw some spots of blood around his head and his eye looks pretty as well. I feel so bad, I don't know what to do for him. I don't know if he got attacked by something or one of the other chickens went after him. I've been noticing lately that he's the straggler of the group, always left behind, always "looking" for the others. Do you think they would disown him to the point they'd peck at him to get him away from them?!? and the only thing thats leading me to believe he might have gotten attacked is that the 4 others seemed to be hiding out in the coop when I went out there. I just don't know what to do with him. :(

Lynzi--catch him and give him a good inspection. You should be able to see if its pecking or teeth marks that are on him. Wash his wounds (i use dawn dish detergent and warm water) and carefully inspect his injured leg to see if it feels broken or out of place. Rinse his eye carefully with plain water to remove any debris that might have gotten in it. Put him in a quiet place where he can rest with food and water. If the others are indeed hiding in the coop, then it was an attack and you may want to lock them up until you can determine what happened. He should recover. I know you like to freerange but given what has just happened, you may want to build them a secure run and freerange them when you can be there with them. If it is a predator, they will be back looking for an easy meal. I hope your little guy recovers well and rejoins his group.

Anyone need a few day old barnyard mix chicks? Will be in rensselaer tonight and will have a few extra chicks.. Cass gets first choice, but I'll have roughly 8 more chicks that need homes.

Free if you come get them at the train station tonight, but I accept donations of a few hatching eggs for my broodies (large-ish fowl only, no silkies, geese, guineas, ducks or emu hee hee).

He's gone.

He was in the coop resting and when I went up to check on him he was lifeless, just laying there. So I buried him. :-( I did give him a good rinse earlier and I didn't see any bite marks but some really tiny holes, which I'm wondering was a larger snake? We have so many around here, I see at least two smaller ones a day. I wonder what other types of snakes we have around here. They were down by the lower end of my yard this morning where we have this big old tree stump that lord only knows what types of creatures have been living under. I'm wondering if they were down there pecking around and ended up pecking at a larger snake that went after him to protect itself. I have yet to see any predators around here other than hawks in the sky. I'm not doubting we have them by any means, but my chickens only free range during the day and they have yet to wander that far from their coop. So it's just weird. I have to some research on the types of snakes we have around here.

Sorry about everyone's losses in the last few months. I had a good surprise yesterday and today. Was all ready to move the dozen ducks out of the house to their new coop and run when I went to visit Travis and Tab and came home with 10 new youngsters. They are growing out well and one precocious little pullet laid a few dozen eggs and then went broody. She continues to set on nothing

Two of the duck hens decided to lay in the corners of the room they are in and brood, so I let them go figuring the last batch was infertile and Hunk wasn't doin' it right. Was counting days and almost cleaned up Brownie's attempt in the corner last weekend, but got busy and decided it could wait till tomorrow when I can finish the second duck pen and get everyone out. Last night I went to get Brownie and throw her into the bathtub for some R & R and there was a duckling peeking out of her feathers. Tonight when I got home from work there are 8 of them. I guess the other 10 will go out tomorrow and the two mamas will stay in until I build something safe outside for them to raise their babies in.

And to think I was obsessing about getting a brooder. A couple of the silkies are broody, too, and I was hoping to get some bantam cochin eggs for them to hatch. Chicken math at work.

Does anyone want a handsome golden cuckoo marans rooster? I got him from Travis and he has turned out to be a pretty boy and well behaved. I am going to keep his brother and the one hatchery silkie rooster that has declared himself a pet by following me around and begging to be petted. The rest of the scruffy hatchery silky roos are going in the freezer for soup unless someone wants a huge slick looking guy named Don for a pet. He is also very calm and sweet and looks like he may be a mix with some heavy breed.

Tomorrow looked like the perfect day to process, but my daughter who lives next door looked at me funny and said she's having a birthday party for my grandson

. Darn squabbling boy things get to torment everyone for another day. Found a camp cooking table at Walmart that looks perfect for a work area. It has a half plastic and half metal mesh top and a place to hang a trash bag. The legs can be adjusted for height and the mesh should be perfect for hanging over a bucket.

Ok. NO ONE give me chicks for ANY REASON. PROMISE ME. I have too many birds. I love them all and can't get rid of any of them. Then I have this broody I don't want to hatch eggs, so I get her some chicks. And she rejects them. Would have killed them if I hadn't shut off the coop light and stood there to see how things were going to go. So now I am raising them in the house. In this heat. GRRRrrr....no more birds. No more birds. NO MORE BIRDS.
